It's a Girl!
Third Impact has given birth to a baby girl, Third Impact Jr. Yes, I have made children the equivalent of Extra Lives for couples.

We don't know who the Father is. Perhaps once the Economy starts up they'll share a room and we'll find out. Money on it being ColonialAdmiral.
The father is Darth Mordius. Congratulations! Next child is your 1-up if it's a boy. ^_^.

That must suck for Third Impact, since odds are she only gave him pity sex for sucking so bad at life and ended up preggers.

Acidburns, the only non-military Jeweler, went insane. Surprisingly, she took control of the emergency structure I had built for just this inevitability, the Jeweler's Shop, and took only a single Red Spinel gem.

Estimated worth: 96000@

Unlike Mordius, who was possessed, Acidburns remembers how to do this. She is now a Legendary Jeweler and it is my pleasure to announce her now a member of the Equestrian Class for such outstanding Artifact Manufacture.

The strongest Dwarf in the entire fortress is Acidburns

When am I going to train any more animals, I wonder? My wardog took out Dargos pretty quickly, so we could probably use more of them. Poor dog, getting injured.

I love this thread. I picture my guy to be a "Chief Wiggum" kinda guy. :)

Despite our dysfunctinal location, it seems our dwarves are seriously tanky. We have too ass-kicking miners, and Acidburns can rip it up with the best of them. We truly are appropriate dwarves.

Announcement

The Dwarven Kingdom of Äkilbesmar, known in the human tongue as "The Star Destroying Web"", has announced a draft of dwarves to bolster its numbers in its Fortress-Town of Idoktekkud, "Palelabor".

Any Dwarf with over 1500 posts is elligible for immediate drafted based upon whim. If you are horridly offended by seeing your name in this game for some unfathomable reason, please PM to have it retroactively edited out of all mentions.

But seriously you'd be really weird if you did that.

Immigrant Signups will continue until I get bored and begin playing again.

That's what I thought once when I recruited my Legendary Engraver to wrestle a troll. He's been bedridden for a couple years now because of a mangled lower left arm from the incident.

I eagerly await the goblin sieges/hordes of chasm creatures.

The demon is symbolic of the madness that possessed Dargos. The two thrones are the decision between good and evil that all dwarves must make. The giants symbolize the evil attempt at squashing other dwarves that he chose. The two diamonds are the heroic dogs that saved Palelabor. The laboring dwarf and anvil are the causes of his madness. The mangrove trees are for the River of the Dead, and the traveling dwarves are a reminder that we all are mortal and that we too will pass on.

So does my dwarf look like that drawing of a really buff Abraham Lincoln punching some guy in the face?

Tour of Palelabor, Circa 1053

Firstly-
Image
This is the defensive shaft, along with the trading outpost and the bare beginnings of a road.

Secondly-
Image
This is Palelabor. I labeled all new structures that weren't in the last one.

A- The Bank Vault/Money Storage. I have placed it in such a silly location because it will make dwarves walk more to get to the coins. Little inconveniences! MUAHAH!
B- Planned L-Bend Stockroom/Shops
C- Statue Garden, with a bunch of statues arranged in the shape of a statue.
D- Jeweler's Shop and Crossbow/Bolt Manufacturary.
E- Housing Blocks Coan and Dora
F- Tomb of Dargos and more room for dead people
G- Noble Housing- Under Construction.

Thirdly-
Image
This is beyond Palelabor

A- Strip Mining Operation's Infancy
B- Magma Forge and Smelter
C- ???????

Palelabor Spring/Summer Produce List

Priority 1. Nobility Quarters- We must house the nobles and make them happy. The Sheriff especially, as the Dwarven Judicial Branch can be very unforgiving to people it annoys.

Priority 2. Stocks/Shops- We need to finish creating a huge room with stockpiles of every non-military good, in order to make the job of supplying items to the citizens easier.

Priority 3- Jail- We need to create a jail with some cages to place criminals in.

Priority 4- Elephant- There is a zombie elephant standing on top of some goods that the dead humans dropped. Squad BRONZE THROWERS is to report immediately to combat this menace. FOR PALELABOR!

Is BDZing the canyon with a lava channel not a priority? Or are you getting too much use out of the canyon monsters as target practice and bone supply?

Never seen one, probably because I don't have a Bookkeeper and thus can't chasm my refuse. If they get too bad we'll BDZ it.

However, Elephant mission rescinded. We need more practice and way better army before we take on an elephant.

That would be bad.

Also, more ammo. I checked our ammo before assigning the target and there was not enough for rapid fire, long time shooting.

Incidentally, I love the human truce/peace treaty dialog:

Code: Select all

The Baron Onul Gusilshoveth meets with the human Diplomat Noloc Abepobe

Peace is calling out to us. How do you respond?

Onul Gusilshoveth:

Enter - I hear her voice. Let us stop this war.

Space - We will drown her out with the screams of your dying. Begone.
WE WILL DROWN OUT THE CALL OF PEACE WITH THE SCREAMS OF YOUR DYING!

Okay Palelaborians, time for an important decision?

What, besides the Crossbow, shall be the Weapon of the Free Army? We may have smaller squads of different weapon users, but I want to mass produce one type for us.

Axes- Good for slashing damage, severing limbs, and inflicting direct damage through bleeding and massive trauma. Defeats small enemies good because of this, since they have less HP. Dwarven traditional weapon, also means Carpenters are instant military machines.

Spears- Good for piercing damage, hitting vital organs, and causing internal injuries. Defeats large enemies because you don't have to hew off a dragon's arm to poke it in the lungs. Gives off a nice SPARTA vibe.

Swords- Halfway between both. Can be made of Obsidian to save Steel.

Maces, Clubs, Mauls, Hammers, etc.- Blunt damage. Can knock enemies backwards and also inflicts massive internal injuries. Bad side is that it can break or mangle limbs but there won't be bleeding and slow death that claims large enemies more than direct damage.

Picks- They're basically sucky axes that deal damage like spears. Plus side- Miners can thus be the military.

Also, should we make our gear out of Bronze or Steel? Bronze is a very plentiful and easy-to-create/work material, but it isn't as strong. Steel is horridly complex to make but a unit decked out in Steel Plate Armor with Steel Weapons kicks total ass.

How much armor should our crossbowmen get? How about infantry? Chainmail for the Archers and Plate for the Infantry? Plate for both?

My own reccomendation? Spears, to better defeat Zombie Elephants.

Either that, or half-half Spears and Axes.

Steel weapons! Melee should get full plate and axes while archers get steel/bronze mail of some sort.

After careful consideration, Plebeian First Rank Darth Mordius casts his vote for bronze spears: after all,

THIS

IS

PALELABOUR

and you need bronze spears to all spartan, lolz *I'm a smarmy asshole*?

Naturally, engraved with the symbol of the cockroach, the emblem of palelabour. All those other idjit engravers couldn't be bothered to get the design right.

Base Weapons
Axe- 110 Slash Damage, Axe Skill
Crossbow (Melee)- 70 Bludgeon Damage, Hammer Skill
Mace- 120 Bludgeon Damage, Mace Skill
Pick- 70 Pierce Damage, Mining Skill, 200% Internal Injury Boost
Sword- 100 Slash Damage, Sword Skill, 100% Internal Injury Boost
Spear- 100 Pierce Damage, Spear Skill, 200% Internal Injury Boost
Warhammer- 120 Budgeon Damage, Hammer Skill

Relevant Base Armor Protection Factors
TORSO (second number's meaning unknown. Arms? Behind? Pierce?)
=Plate Mail- 70/50 (takes 3 Bars of Metal)
=Chain Mail- 50/30 (takes 2 Bars of Metal)
LEGS
=Greaves (Plate)- 70 (takes 2 Bars of Metal)
=Leggings (Chain)- 60
HEAD
=Helm- 60
HANDS
=Gauntlets- 60
FEET
=Boots- 60

Material Percentage Quality For Weapons Damage and Armor
Steel=133 (Also, Obsidian Short Swords)
Iron=100
Bronze=75
Copper=66
Other=50

Item Quality-
Item Name : Basic crafted weapon - x1.0 damage
-Item Name- : Well-Crafted weapon - x1.2 damage
+Item Name+ : Finely Crafted weapon - x1.4 damage
*Item Name* : Superior Quality weapon - x1.6 damage
≡Item Name≡ : Exceptional weapon - x1.8 damage
☼Item Name☼ : Masterful weapon - x2.0 damage
=============

Here's the raw data for anyone who wants to make a more informed decision.

Remember that internal injuries are basically the only way to slay large enemies like Dragons, Elephants, Hydra, etc. Most weapons cause internal injuries and location-specific damage (like hitting knees instead of legs, or chopping off hands instead of hitting the lower arm) occaisionally. Boosted weapons like Spears do almost every time, but are less capable of disabling instantly than bigger, meatier weapons likes axes. An Axe is far more likely to sever an arm of a goblin, but it can't poke a Dragon in the heart and insta-win.

Suggesting that dwarves use anything other than axes (or maybe warhammers, for the beserkers) is heresy. Swords are for the wimpy humans, spears are positively elvish.

I vote swords to conserve steel. Crossbows already deal with larger enemies fairly well, and would be more suitable to smaller enemies (Goblins, Antmen, etc). Woodcutters can stick to axes and miners can stick to picks.

I must admit that spears are awesome though. I recently had a Spearmaster solo a Bronze Colossus without any injury.
