Star wars Christmas special

Post by Laird »

Should it be considered as Canon Vs debating material?

I mean it was created by GL and is onscreen(well if you can find a copy anymore.)

Heh Figured this place would be as good as any to ask.

Let us not forget the Ewok movies as well.

My angry family made me turn it off when it aired. Mom and dad could put up with a lot, but IIRC I didn't need much coercion on that one.

Not only that but I am sure that there used to be an Ewoks cartoon that aired on Saturday mornings. You have to count them as cannon too!

If it has been stated to be non canon by GL or Lucasfilm/arts/books etc then no otherwise the rules of canon seem rather clear.

What could it possibly add however? I only remember some singing and so on, but a number of inbuilt safety systems have erased the actual content from my memory so I may be wrong.

Although absolutely NO ONE likes it, it's almost impossible to challenge its canonicity. I consider it to be canonical, for the purposes of debates.

Really? When? Is my SW Insider from only a few months ago already out of date?

As I said on the mirror thread on SB.com...

Seriously, it's not canon nor versus material for debates. Lucas has spent no small effort trying to bury it and if the creator of the franchise claims it doesn't count, then it shouldn't count.

And really, I want to see the trekkie who seriously brings up Jefferson Starship as an anti-Imperial weapon... they'd be laughed out of the message board. I'm sure no one here is stupid enough to take it seriously.

If lucas has stated it isn't canon then lets have the quote and put the situation to rest.

It's mentioned here and there at starwars.com.

"Fett was one of the first new characters to be designed for The Empire Strikes Back. He can trace his origins to rejected Darth Vader concepts that once had the Dark Lord as a rogue bounty hunter. Concept artists Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston were most responsible for Fett's design. He first appeared in an 11-minute animated segment of the lamentable "Star Wars Holiday Special" television broadcast in 1978."

Saxton actually treats it as official. He references it in his "Death Star survivors" page, and IIRC, it was the first source to name the Wookie homeworld. Since Lucasfilm's canon policy explicitly states that only the films, scripts, novelizations, and radio dramas are canon, the Holiday Special is at best official (where it stands in regards to the rest of the EU, if it indeed hasn't been totally disavowed, is unclear). At any rate, official is overruled by canon in case of any contradiction, so we don't, as Laird so ineloquently put it, "gotta deal with it".

Who cares? What difference does the Holiday Special make anyway? Since I've never seen it, does it contain anything really stupid?

By the way, the official statement on canonicity is that the movies and related materials are canon. Note: MOVIES.

The last time I checked, a TV show is not considered a movie. That's why Paramount makes a point of separately listing the movies and TV shows in its statement on what constitutes true Star Trek.
