Milk Thistle - Advanced

Post by Justforfun000 »

This has always been a favourite herb of mine and it looks like they are finally getting the research together on it. It's not only highly indicative of liver protecting from many toxic insults, it looks like it might even have cancer-killing properties now.

This is a link to an in screen PDF file. It's slightly technical as it's a paper put forth by medical doctors and researchers, but it's well worth wading through for those who can decipher it. It's not too bad actually. You'll get the gist.

For the record my mother has been on milk thistle for years since she takes Dilantin daily for Trigeminal Neuralgia and it's pretty hard on the liver. On top of that she drinks WAY too much alcohol, (wine), but amazingly her liver enzymes are always good. On top of this her good cholesterol is twice as high as her bad which is low anyway and I came across reports that milk thistle also increases good cholesterol so for all we know that might be responsible as well.

See what some of the science people here think of the report:

There's oldwives tales about milkweed here... is it the same thing? The stuff the Monarch butterfly lives on?

No hon. Completely different. It's a member of the thistle family. Not sure what milkweed is from....

Another report on Milk Thistle - admittedly, it's from 2000, but it does show that there has been some serious interest in it for quite awhile. This is a summary - it also tells you how to access the full report. It's slightly less rosy that what's in the OP - the biggest problems with this sort of meta-analysis is the lack of good quality reseach.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job.
