Complaints about GUN
I own GUN for the Gamecube. I call it "The Game Red Dead Revolver Should Have Been". Plenty of blood, gore, and action coupled with a free-roaming system that makes me think it should be called "Grand Theft Equine". Unfortunately, there are some issues that deserve to be talked about.
1. The sniper rifles. Despite ammunition being scarce, they are very valuble in many situations. A lack of ammo means that you end up having to get too close to deal with a situation that could have been handled from farther.
2. The best gun in the game. This is the worst flaw in the game. The best gun is a Pepperbox carbine. Unfortunately, you don't get it until you beat every story mission and every side mission, leaving it a pointless, trivial weapon that can be used only for shooting the odd attacking bandit or stirring up trouble in town, which will end up with every townsperson against you.
3. Impossible cavalry. About seven or so missions to the end, the standard horse riding hired hand is replaced with militia cavalry. They have semi-automatic rifles that can be fired faster than your own and can drop your health to half in about three shots, while at the same time absorbing more punishment than any standard soldier. And they're damn common at the end, too.
4. Too easy boss fights. Almost every boss can be beaten by using Quickdraw. Hoodoo Brown was probably the easiest boss in the game, despite coming in at the halfway mark. Simply use Quickdraw, blast him with your unlimited ammo pistols, and then when you're upstairs just do the same. It only takes a few shots to kill him. Despite being a boss, he's easier than one militia cavalry trooper.
5. Too hard boss fights. One of the last missions features you on horseback (though your horse will probably die within seconds) against a howitzer on a train, manned by a boss who is very hard to damage and almost completely covered by his cannon, and a never-ending supply of militia cavalry. When you lose your horse, the only cover is one boulder in the field where the train is stopped. The cannon fires about one shell every two seconds, and two shots will blow you clear to Dodge City, while the cavalry have those overpowered rifles and are far faster than you.
6. No autosave. The second worst problem in the game. Every save is made in the pause menu, a slow and tedious process. The game makes no effort to even remind you to save, so one storm that shuts down your system means losing a lot of progress.
7. Too big a map. The map is, in a word, huge. This poses some problems. For one, horses are only available either in the two towns or out in the countryside. Problem is, the towns compose one small section of the map, and the there are two areas in the whole territory that have wild horses to grab. And saves are made where the last mission ends, so returning to a game saved in a town could leave you stranded out in the middle of nowhere, forcing you to trudge across a huge piece of land to find a horse, which may or may not run away or be removed by a trigger.
8. Missions in the middle of nowhere. You can take a wanted poster in Dodge, but end up all the way on the other side of the map just to find the bastard. Again, the world is huge, and with the only transportation being horse and foot, it can take up to two minutes to get out to your objective, complete it in a third of that time, then take another two minutes to make your way out of the canyon.
9. A useless knife. My last gripe about this game. From a shopkeeper in Dodge you can buy a skinning knife. I don't know what it's point could be, as it's not explained in game, but the few animals in the game are off the wayside, again making a simple journey far too long, and are sparse in general. A giant field, the biggest area in the game, has about five bison in it. The other few animals, including mountain lions and small wolves, are out in areas without even a trail to guide you in and are hidden in caves. The knife is a waste of $25, which, in this game, is not that cheap.

Definetely. However, I get distracted easily, so I will often wander off for something else. Friends coming over, food, bathroom, computer especially. And if I have a new book, then good luck getting me to play it.DPDarkPrimus wrote:How about the fact that I 100%ed the game in six hours?
That's complaint number one right there.

And it's rubbish. As DPDP says, you can finish it very easily. As you can tell by Chitoryu's description, it's largely a soulless GTA-em-up: all the violence and gore with not a lot of content.
It's pretty old too, so you can pick it up pre-owned. Get it from EB, you'll definately be finished in time to return it.

Well, violence and gore is always good. I think this actually has more than GTA. A quickdraw shot to the face can blast off chunks of his head and expose his brain. A head shot with a powerful rifle causes an explosion of blood and brain matter. Dismemberment available too, and enemies writhe in pain for some time after being shot down.all the violence and gore with not a lot of content.
Of course, I hate when it's too realistic. The Guinea Pig series comes to mind.

The title really is just "GUN". It's not an FPS though. It's a third-person game. It only goes into first person for Quickdraw, which gives your pistols unlimited ammo and slows everything down.ColonialAdmiral wrote:I meant the title.
Unless it is actually "GUN"?
I guess it doesn't matter much anyway, as I'm not really all that interested in FPS's anyway.
Sorry, I thought I just said it was lots of gore and NOT MUCH CONTENT. Your pathetic descriptions of ingame gore are NOT content. You can finish the game in one sitting and get 100% everything in no time - gore is NOT helping. The GTA games aren't about gore, you lauaghble teenager, they're about a freeform world WITH THINGS TO DO IN IT.chitoryu12 wrote:Well, violence and gore is always good. What GUN doesn't have.
But please, provide more detailed descriptions of the awesome leet uber-gore in the game.

I never said that it made it better than GTA. Gladly. Let me just expose the gray matter of a few more fat guys and prostitutes. And get some sleep. It's almost two.But please, provide more detailed descriptions of the awesome leet uber-gore in the game.
Get this - I *never said you did*. Nowhere have I suggested that you think GUN is better than GTA. I've merely COMPARED GUN to GTA, as GUN has far less content but more gore. You apparently think this is worth it.chitoryu12 wrote:I never said that it made it better than GTA. I said that it had more gore than GTA, which I like, you laughable....man....thingy.
Please don't both lie and try to insult me in the same breath, it's just embarrassing for you. Perhaps you're used to this.
ZOMG YOU ARE HARDCORE. Is this supposed to mean anything, or is it like your regular posts?chitoryu12 wrote:Gladly. Let me just expose the gray matter of a few more fat guys and prostitutes. And get some sleep. It's almost two.
I thought the story part was good (but short) but the side-quests were really, really weak. That's not too uncommon in open games, but considering the length of the actual story, it compounds the problem.DPDP wrote:GUN was, overall, a slightly-above-average game.
But there wasn't much game to be had.

The best gun is pretty much an 'I win' button, having it in the story missions is pretty much stupid as it would make the game hideously easy.chitoryu12 wrote: 2. The best gun in the game. If anything I thought it was too small, though maybe GTA spoiled me.7. Too big a map. The map is, in a word, huge.
2 minutes, wow, what a massive time. They're not going to stick all the side quests in one area when there's a whole map out there for you to explore.8. Missions in the middle of nowhere. IIRC the skinning knife allows you to scalp people ..... which doesn't do anything except make you feel badass for doing it. I heard there was going to be something to do with scalping but they didn't manage to implement it in time before release. It does help you keep in character when you're fighting alongside the indians though.9. A useless knife. My last gripe about this game. From a shopkeeper in Dodge you can buy a skinning knife. Overall I had a lot of fun playing Gun (on PS2), but it was just too short. That's pretty much my only gripe. If you see it in a bargain bin then IMO you can't go far wrong.
It also has a kickass voice cast. Thomas Jane, Ron Pearlman, Lance Henriksen to name a few.

I apologize for accusing you. I misunderstood you when you implied that I was calling gore game content.Get this - I *never said you did*. Misunderstood you, and the insult should have been obvious as a joke. Please don't both lie and try to insult me in the same breath, it's just embarrassing for you. Perhaps you're used to this.
Sarcasm. Ever hear of it?ZOMG YOU ARE HARDCORE. Is this supposed to mean anything, or is it like your regular posts?
Well it's a hell of a reward considering that you spend time trying to get 100% and your reward is useless. The best gun is pretty much an 'I win' button, having it in the story missions is pretty much stupid as it would make the game hideously easy.
It's either a glitch or shitty game mechanics, but I've found that the majority of my head shots, even at close range, will hit them in the shoulder. The only was to effectively hit their heads is to enter Quickdraw, which is good only at short range and will likely run out as they always arrive in large waves. It's all about the headshots
Keeps you in character, but I really don't see much point in randomly scalping people. It seems like a bit of a bad decision to allow you to buy something related to a game design that wasn't even implemented in the first place.IIRC the skinning knife allows you to scalp people ..... which doesn't do anything except make you feel badass for doing it. I heard there was going to be something to do with scalping but they didn't manage to implement it in time before release. It does help you keep in character when you're fighting alongside the indians though.
I found it fun, too. Bit repetitive, but fun. And I managed to get to the final boss within a day of buying it, though I still can't kill him. I know how, I just have trouble luring him over to the spot where I can damage him.Overall I had a lot of fun playing Gun (on PS2), but it was just too short. That's pretty much my only gripe. If you see it in a bargain bin then IMO you can't go far wrong.

Re: Complaints about GUN
You can have it being like the Patriot in MGS 3 you get it for completing the game and then can restart it and play through the game again with the uber-gun. Makes it easier but it can still be very fun to effortlessly mow down everything your path with it.2000AD wrote:The best gun is pretty much an 'I win' button, having it in the story missions is pretty much stupid as it would make the game hideously easy.chitoryu12 wrote: 2. You sure? The biggest complaint among players I've met was that you only got it when it was no longer useful. Maybe they didn't start up a new game, but that's only a possibility.Crazedwraith wrote:You can have it being like the Patriot in MGS 3 you get it for completing the game and then can restart it and play through the game again with the uber-gun. Sorry, that was poorly phrased. I didn't mean it was like that, I've never played GUN just that It would be a possible solution to the problem.chitoryu12 wrote:You sure? Not really. Westerns are a bit underdeveloped. World War II and fantasy settings are more popular for action games. You could always get Red Dead Revolver. Better graphics, but less weapons, a linear storyline, and repetitive gameplay. There's Call of Juarez, but I've only heard good things about it and saw some videos, so I can't give an opinion on it.His Divine Shadow wrote:If GUN sucks, are there any good western games around these days?

GUN doesn't suck, it's just short and has no replay value. If you can find it cheap, it's well worth a playthrough. His Divine Shadow wrote:If GUN sucks, are there any good western games around these days?

It's not really the ratio - if the game has instant-fail stealth sections, it can fuck off and die because that's clumsy hamfisted game design railroading you into one solution. And I don't want to play games like that. Game designers need to realise that 'stealth' should be organically a part of the game, the game shouldn't be divided into 'zero stealth kill everyone lol' bits and 'shh sneak or instantly die somehow even though you could just kill everyone' bits.
