Overlord
Looking at the reviews, I expected this game mediocre but I tried it out regardless. In short, it's crack. Sure, it has some flaws (mainly in controls, but you get used to them), but the atmosphere is great. The design of the enemies are awesome (for one, higher level halflings are very disturbing) and the level design is very immersive.
The greatest thing about this game are your minions. Remember those games that require escort missions and the NPC get stuck or lost all the time. Well, you got a lot of excorting to do but thankfully, the AI of your minions is excellent. The patchfinding is excellent (you can simply order a minion to pick something up and he'll carry it automaticly to the right place, while you continue your rampage). Another nice thing is they pick up everything of value and bring it automatically back you you. If they find stuff they can use themselves (weapons, armor, ornaments,...) they will automatically equip it.
So if you're looking for an original hack & slash game, with some mild puzzels on the side, this game is worth a try.

I got it on two-click discount, it's good fun. I really like the minions, they're adorable.

I love this game. The lack of a map feature meant that I ran round in circles in quite a few instances but I just can't stop playing. One learns to recognize landmarks after a while.
The minions are very cute and well animated. I love the reds. I like to park them on high ground somewhere to rain down fireballs on the enemy. The blues are the most ineffective, not good for much except if you're on water a lot.

I may buy this game as well but need to know 2 things.
1. Is combat in this game any better than the mindless hack and slash fighting in most fantasy RPGs ? You know is there any actual need for strategy and tactics rather than just button pressing ?
2. How replayable is it ?
Any one like to shed light on how Overlord differs from games like Fable or Oblivion ?

I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

I'm probably not as qualified as many to speak because I don't play a large amount of RPGs, but here's my two cents anyway.Sarevok wrote:I may buy this game as well but need to know 2 things.

I think it's probably a bit of both in a way. You can run around and hack away with your minions if you like, or you can try to employ some tactics, such as having your red minions stand to the side and use their fireballs, ambush the enemy with your greens, and so forth.
I'm actually currently stuck at one point in the game, so I haven't finished it all the way through yet. But I can definately see me playing it again.2. How replayable is it ?
I haven't played Fable, so I can't comment there. However, between Overlord and Oblivion, Overlord gives you more of a command role as you can just order your minions to do everything. Plus, Overlord isn't as "serious" (for lack of a better word) a game as Oblivion was. The fact that you can watch your minions drink ale and pee everywhere is an example , and the game itself has a more satirical/humorous tone to it. The armor/weapons customization is a lot more simple as there are less options to chose from. Not that this is a negative or anything. It's just the amount that you find in a game like Oblivion isn't needed in Overlord. That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure others can elaborate more too. Hope that helps some.Any one like to shed light on how Overlord differs from games like Fable or Oblivion ?

What part are you stuck at?

Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil,
but a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow
was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law! Now, the fool
seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku...

So this is the England-conquering Bastard son of Dungeon Keeper and Fable?
I should get, then.

1) It's not a mindless hack and slash. You can try to play it like that, but in all likelihood, you won't get very far into the game without the help of your minions. If you are not smart with your minions, they are not going to live very long either. So, yes, you better have a brain when you play this game.Sarevok wrote:I may buy this game as well but need to know 2 things.

The Overlord character can hack away at his enemies and cast various types of offensive or supportive spells. His minions only need directions, they automatically tear away at anything they can get their hands on.
2) I can see myself replaying this trying to be as evil as possible or to be as non-corrupt as possible. Right now, I'm doing whatever I feel like to the poor peasants.
I would describe Overlord as a real-time tactical rpg.

I'm at the part where you're in the Dwarven Lands (I think it's called the Golden Hills?) and you have to get the Mother Goddess statue or whatever it's called back before the theives steal it. There's a creek with a fortress/castle behind it. I used my blues to cross the water and lower the drawbridge, but I can't figure out how to get the damned doors open. There were two of the explosives up the hill and I tried to use my browns to get them to the door to blow it open, but the timer is too short and it detonates before I get them to the door.Executor32 wrote:What part are you stuck at?
Sidenote, I made the mistake of parking my horde right in the same path and the bomb detonated while my brown was running through the middle of them. I lost like twenty minions at once.
I'm sure that it's something really simple that I'm overlooking, but that's what's got me stumped at the moment.
