I've been having a bit of a go and it hurts to suck so bad.
I love Trackmania, but goddamn this game is hard. The online element that they had in Nations is now completely off the show, I'm ready for some SERIOUSLY competitive action.
Trackmania United - anyone else playing?

I just downloaded nations - I am having a ball. Some of the tracks are SERIOUSLY fucked up though, I couldn't finish a bunch of the ones I tried.
Quick question - what is different/improved about united? I'd consider getting United because Nations is so much fun, I just want to know if it would be worth it.

United takes it into an MMO style thing. The game has its own currency.
Everytime you logon you get coppers.
Set a good official time? Get copper.
Create new cars/skins/tracks/challenges/music/content and sell it through the ingame web for coppers.
I'm sure there's more stuff to get coppers from, like winning MP races, tournaments and more. It seems like there's going to be a lot of depth to this game. I'm still just muddling through the early stages though.
