Finnish researchers identify cancer trigger protein

The source is Xinhua, the Chinese news service, but it was the first thing in English I found on a cursory search, and it's fairly scant on details. Was big news here a few days ago. The kicker is that if the results pan out, it may very well be possible to develop anti-cancer drugs that target cancer cells only and leave the rest of the body alone, instead of requiring the kind of toxic cocktails that are now used.
Finnish researchers identify cancer trigger protein

Finnish researchers have identified a protein that appears to play an important role in spreading cancer to normal cells, local media reported Friday.

Researchers from the Universities of Tampere and Turku have found a protein named CIP2A that causes healthy cells to become cancerous, the report said.

Inhibition of the protein might evolve into a new cancer treatment with few side effects, Jukka Westermarck, head of the research team, said.

The findings, described as a breakthrough, were published on Friday in the international science journal Cell.

How old is this report? I remember seeing an article similar to this several (2-5) years ago, but this may be the latest update. The researchers were trying to use dendritic cells which were programmed to recognize a particular protien found only on cancer cells. The cells would then help your own immune system to attack the cancer cells by marking them for destruction.

I agree. This will be a welcome relief to the toxic cocktails we typically employ currently.

This report is very recent, no more than a couple of weeks old. They actually identified the key protein that will allow them to start developing ways to go after the cancer-causing mechanism and interrupt and reverse it.

So it sounds like this mechanism would actually be able to reverse the cancer growth. Could you give a few more details on the research? I would like to try to look it up in a journal.

Why don't you try the journal referenced in the article (Cell).

Addendum: The summary from Cell is available here.

Thanks for the link. I was looking for authors names for a search, that link took me straight to the article abstract. Now to see if the library has a copy...
