The Parade of Horribles

Here one sees a collection of some of the senior officers of the Third Reich as it existed on Earth-616 (the primary continuity of the Marvel omniverse), some time in 1941. From left to right: SS-Gruppenführer Dr. Heinrich Baron Zemo, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Luitpold Himmler (Chef der Deutschen Polizei, Chief of the German Police), Generalfeldmarschall Heinrich Alfred Hermann Walther von Brauchitsch (Oberbefehlshaber der Heer, Commander-in-Chief of the Army), Reichsmarschall Hermann Wilhelm Göring (Reichsluftfahrtminister, Reich Aviation Minister, and Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe, Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force), Großadmiral Erich Johann Albert Raeder (Oberbefehlshaber der Kriegsmarine, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy), Reichsleiter Walter Richard Rudolf Heß (Stellvertreter des Führers, Deputy of the Leader), Oberst Wolfgang Baron von Strucker, Führer und Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler (Oberster Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces), Generaloberst Johann Schmidt (alias der Rote Totenkopf, the Red Skull), Oberst Fritz Klaue, Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Bodewin Johann Gustav Keitel (Chef des Oberkommandos der Wehrmacht, Chief of the High Command of the Armed Forces), Stabschef SA Viktor Lutze (Stabschef der SA, Chief of Staff of the Stormtroopers), Dr. Arnim Zola, Hauptmann Julia Ratsel (alias Kriegerfrau, Warrior Woman), The Hon. John Falsworth (alias Baron Blood), the Agent of 1,000 Faces, and Hauptmann Willie Lohmer (alias Herr-Mann, Master Man).

(For other Earth-616 World War II pictures, see here.)

Although a previous version of this image appears in the thread linked above, this is the completed version.

When the Avengers of Earth-982 traveled to Earth-9907 in A-Next #10 - 11, they discovered that the fate of World War II (and with it, world history) hinged on a simple axis: Whether or not the Red Skull was imprisoned in suspended animation on Exile Island in 1945. On Earth-9907, he escaped the ruins of his fortress and proceeded to assassinate Hitler, taking his place as Führer des Großdeutschen Reichs. Under the Skull's leadership, Captain America and the Invaders were killed, and the Axis Powers defeated the Allies, eventually conquering the world and subjecting it to totalitarian dictatorship for the next 60 years.

In A-Next #10, the Skull appears in a vaguely Wehrmacht-like black and gray uniform. The uniform has been 're-imagined' here as that of a Reichsmarschall (a real-life rank held exclusively by Hitler's erstwhile designated heir, Hermann Göring, and seen above in "Parade of Horribles").

On Earth-9907, the Red Skull spent years ruling the world with an iron fist. Years after his triumph in World War II, he traveled to the Balkans for the annual purge, and there encountered a talented Latverian boy of Gypsy descent. Impressed by the boy, he resolved to take him under his wing (in much the same way that Adolf Hitler had done with a young Johann Schmidt, the Red Skull himself). The boy eventually became the Skull's designated heir, and followed in his footsteps by assassinating the Führer and taking power for himself.

The boy's name was Victor Von Doom.

Image

By the time the Avengers of Earth-982 traveled to Earth-9907, Dr. Doom had been Leader for decades (as well as Sorcerer Supreme by default, seeing that he had ordered the deaths of every other magician on Earth), and had devised a scheme to take his conquests unto other worlds, by commissioning Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) to create a cosmic cube. In the end Doom was destroyed along with the cube, leaving his right and left hand men, Dr. Reed Richards and Dr Heinrich Baron Zemo, to fight for control of the empire (A-Next #11).

Richards and Zemo are seen here wearing Wehrmacht uniforms, with the rank insignia of a Generalfeldmarschall; both are wearing Iron Crosses, but Richards is also wearing a Pour le Mérite.

General Nicholas J. Fury, Director, Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage, and Logistics Directorate, pictured without the effects of the Infinity Formula. Fury displays an impressive array of medals and decorations, including six Distinguished Service Crosses, six Silver Stars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (with four bronze oak leaves), the Croix de Guerre, and the Gallantry Cross. His uniform is not quite correct -- most obviously he is wearing a nonregulation Sam Browne belt -- but there are few men in the United States who would have the courage to comment as much to a man who has served for longer than Winfield Scott or Hyman Rickover.

Along with the Sam Browne belt, Fury betrays his age with his swagger stick, once regarded as the universal symbol of a commissioned officer.

(Earth-616's Nick Fury is actually a colonel, but this seems ridiculous when one considers his length of service and the level of responsibility held by the DIRSHIELD.)

Image

Dr. Doom takes advantage of his rights as Master of Latveria to address the United Nations General Assembly. Presumably he is testifying on some matter regarding weapons of mass destruction, seeing that he is Earth-616's foremost expert on the subject (as well as being owner of the world's largest private collection; Doom, not Latveria, is a global superpower).

Drawn on Friday, 13 July, in honor of the date. From left to right, Lawrence Talbot (The Wolf-Man), Im-ho-tep, alias Ardath Bey (The Mummy), Erik (The Phantom of the Opera), Count Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Dr. Jack Griffin (The Invisible Man), and the creature from the Black Lagoon.

An incomplete drawing intended to feature the villains of mainstream Marvel and DC superhero movies. From left to right, it presently includes Magneto, Dr. Doom, Lex Luthor, and the Green Goblin.

Fucking AWESOME Publius. The Monsters I especially like. How many of them were played by Karloff?

Boris Karloff played only the '31 Frankenstein's monster and '32 Im-ho-tep, actually. The '41 Talbot was played by Lon Chaney Jr., while the '25 Erik -- that shown here -- was played by his father Lon Chaney; the '43 version of the Phantom, Enrique Claudin, was played by Claude Rains, who had previously (not) appeared as the '33 Griffin. The '54 'Gill Man' was played by Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning.

Bela Lugosi obviously played Dracula in '31. Ironically, he had turned down the role of Frankenstein's monster, leading to Karloff's casting in the part, and his subsequent casting as Im-ho-tep (who amounts to an Egyptian calque of Dracula himself); by '35, his rival was credited solely as "Karloff," which Lugosi found infuriating (the president of Universal used to keep signed photographs of Lugosi as Dracula and Karloff as the monster in his office, but would always hide the latter picture whenever Lugosi came to see him). Strangely enough, Lugosi would go on to play one of the Frankenstein saga's most memorable characters in 1939's Son of Frankenstein, when he played the demented Ygor.
