Is the 360 Elite worth it?

Post by Scottish Ninja »

I may have mentioned in another thread that I'm planning on getting an Xbox 360 soon, and I'm considering going for the Elite. Does anyone here have one, and is it worth the extra 80 bucks over the regular 360?

The only real difference I can see is a (substantially) bigger hard drive and some extra X-Box Live services. Unless the hdd is a big deal to you then it's probably not worth it.

Well, you also need HDMI for upscaling copy-protected content, and for displaying 1080p on most recent TVs. (Insert HDMI 1.2 < HDMI 1.3 argument here)

Do the Elites have the additional GPU heat sink that have been installed in most recently repaired and manufactured 360 models?

With a quick Googling, yes, according to this. (And all the other top links.)

EDIT: Wait, no, the other top links are just using that as a source. I don't doubt it, but everything's based off of that. I'll try and find an official source.

If you're going to download a lot of HD Video from the Video Marketplace, yes. Otherwise, not so much. 13GB doesn't sound like a large HDD these days, but the only non-disposable large content is major game expansions. Most of the DLC is a hundred meg or so, and demos are disposable content you'll play a couple of times to decide whether you want the game and delete. (I've not even half filled it, and I've had one since launch day and have 20+ games, and I've got Shivering Isles on there as well)

If its for your first Xbox 360 and you have an HDMI enabled TV then yes I would say its worth it. I got one myself a few months ago for my first 360 and its great, it comes with its own HDMI cable as well as the original RGB component cable if you dont have an HDMI enabled TV. It also comes with an audio adaptor for if you wanna hook it to a surround sound reciever with an optical audio cable.

I thought the bigger HDD was also sold separately to upgrade the premium 360.

Yeah, for more than the price difference of the Elite....

If you've got the green, I guess it doesn't matter. As far as I know there isn't any difference in the quality of HDMI over component, and I wouldn't pay any substantial amount extra to cut down on 4 wires.

Also, remember to buy your HDMI cables from these guys (or some other online retailer) and not BB/CC/Fry's.

the big HDD and HDMI is probably worth the difference, though you don't need that big of a HDD in the Xbox YET, things could change, and it's good to be prepared.

I would suggest though that you WAIT until the falcon (65nm) based 360's are on the market. You'll see less heat trouble.

and don't pay more than $10 for a HDMI cable unless for some strange reason you need more than 6 feet. Digital signals are (more or less) all or nothing, and perfect is barely better than 'good enough'.

I'd wait until the units with the smaller (falcon) chips that run a lot cooler come out.
