Internet connection problem

Post by Stormin »

Okay, for a while now I have been getting loss of connection problems. When running a constant ping in cmd I would get bursts of 4-15 request timed out, my modem (Terayon) would have its message light go red then disconnect for a few minutes. During these bursts of timed out requests (but before internet disconnects), I am still getting transmission in from the internet, I can still hear people talk over Teamspeak/Ventrilo and see people move in games but I cannot get a signal out.

The cable company already replaced the line going to my house and none of the connections are loose. I have the same problem connecting from modem directly to computer and connecting through my motherboard's Ethernet or a separate Ethernet card doesn't change anything. I tried reformatting my computer already and I have replaced the motherboard and most of the internal components of the computer and the cable company says they cannot figure out what the problem is. I was told by the technician on his second visit that it cannot be the modem since they will not be intermittent but will either work or not.

Any advice besides switching to the local dial-up company? I want to know if there is any way this could be on my end and fixable.

How often does it do this? You might try getting a technician out to try and have him there while it's happening - that could help him diagnose the problem.

Alternatively, you could try just bitching at them until they replace the modem.

EDIT: Is the modem getting enough circulation? Maybe it's overheating?

It happens once or twice a day (edit: That I know of. I am not here 24h a day.) and never for long so by the time I get through the computer system to talk to someone it will be back up.
The modem has plenty of breathing space and never seems to collect dust on the outside.
Modem replacement is one of the last resort options since I will have to pay another $80 for a new one from them, buy one myself and get it to work (I bet they have it set up so its damn hard to do that) or pay an extra $10 a month on my internet bill to rent one. This was the "deal" (ass raping) I was offered when I first signed up with the company, I doubt it has changed much.

I had this exact problem with my cable ages ago, modem was overheating and dropping requests (and I also had it out in the open with breathing room etc).

Do any of your friends have internet service with the same provider? You might try swapping modems with them and seeing what happens. If your friend started having problems, you'd know it was the modem, and if you were still having problems, you'd know it was something other than the modem.

On a switched modem now. I really hope this fixes the problem because I can't think of anything else. Every piece of hardware and software between them and myself has been replaced at least once now.
