Favorites of Doctor Who Series 3
Well now since season 3 has been over for about a month, I am curious to know what all of you Whovians thought was the best and most memorable moments of Season 3
One thing for me that sticks out.....maby because it was the last episode is that Captain Jack is in fact the Face of Boe
But my most memorable moment in Season 3 would be the whole episode of "Blink". The first time I watched it was late at night and the whole atmosphere for it was great. I showed it to some of my friends who weren't Doctor Who fans (not a hard thing to find in America) and they all agreed that this episode was one of the greatest episodes they ever seen of most shows. Just great
The Ending to Family of Blood was great as well. The atmosphere surrounding that episodes ending was a great lead into Blink as well.
Well before I type all the best things about Season 3, i'll give you guys a shot at it

"Boring Conversation anyway" Han Solo
"What kinda archeologist carries a weapon........Bad Example" Colonel Jack O'Neil
"My name is Olo... Hans Olo" -Dr. Daniel Jackson
"Well you did make the Farmingdale Run in less than 12 parsecs" --Personal Quote
"Just popped out for lunch" - Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean

Human Nature, Blink and Utopia were the best eps for my money. The climax of Utopia, from the awesome Doctor/Jack dialogue to the reveal of the Master was easily the highpoint of the season. These three stories had great performances all round (well, except for Worthless Martha Looking Upset during 80% of her screen time) particularly Jacobi and Tennant in his human role.
Jack being the Face if Boe is so cripplingly retarded and stupid a throwaway gag I will never accept it as anything other than a coincidental nickname until there's actual evidence.

The Family of Blood two parter, they were both good and also a lead i to the series finale.
Also the foreshadowing for next season, we never did find out what The Doctor had done to piss off Queen Elizabeth I.

I consider the finale the worst yet, I'd rate it at merely average when the finale should be the high point of the season. Which is sad, because The Master was fantastic played by Simm.
Otherwise, yeah, I'd go with the Human Nature, Blink, Utopia list. The Dalek two parter being the worst. All the rest of the eps I'd rate as average in that they entertained me, but did not grip me... except possibly Smith and Jones, which I thought was the best season starter yet.

I reckon Jack was just fucking with them using stuff that he'd heard along the way while he travelled with the Doctor. I don't even want to contemplate the idea of it being true.Stark wrote:Jack being the Face if Boe is so cripplingly retarded and stupid a throwaway gag I will never accept it as anything other than a coincidental nickname until there's actual evidence.

I too thought that "The Last of the Time Lords" was generally not as strong as either "Doomsday" or even "The Parting of the Ways", but the lead up episodes, "Utopia" and "The Sound of Drums" were really excellent build up stories (even though much of that build up was ruined by yet another cowardly semi-reset ending. I also thought Sir Derek Jacobi was somewhat wasted).Lord Woodlouse wrote: I consider the finale the worst yet, I'd rate it at merely average when the finale should be the high point of the season. Blink and Human Nature/Family of Blood were the stand outs, certainly. I actually enjoyed the three-part finale, even LotTL - loved the munchkin Doctor creature and the use of the Master's own telepathic network to defeat him (sorry Stark )
There were, however, noticeably more mediocre episodes this series (Lazarus, 42, the teeth-achingly bad Dalek story). Martha was weak and I'm glad she's being jetisoned. Tate will be a much tougher companion.

She'll be back sometime next season apparently, though I felt she was better than Rose in some ways. The character was far less irritating on a lot of levels. I blame at least part of it on the Doctor still pining over Rose during the first half of the season.Hillary wrote:Blink and Human Nature/Family of Blood were the stand outs, certainly. "It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
Saying she was less irritating than Rose is damning with faint praise in my book. At least Catherine Tate won't be a love-struck, fawning wreck.General Zod wrote:She'll be back sometime next season apparently, though I felt she was better than Rose in some ways. I think I'm still pining for Ace

Martha's lameness is why the massive plug for Torchwood in the finale irritated me so much. Jack can't save Torchwood, but he's an excellent part of Doctor Who. And the sexual content of THAT relationship is far more awesome than lovestruck teenager/lovestruck medical student with a single pacial expression.

What we should have is some more episodes with Captain Jack next season, minus the Torchwood plugs. I think watching the interaction between him and Tate's character would be incredibly entertaining.Hillary wrote: Saying she was less irritating than Rose is damning with faint praise in my book. When Yana turned back to the Master, I really felt Jacobi should've kept the role as he was just so damn good. He fitted quite well being the Master and instead, we get a person who acts out the generic "I'm a lunatic" which put me off of him from the beginning. It didn't help that he looked like a nutter I remembered watching on X-Files if I'm right. Given what we saw in the end though, I expect to see the Master again.
Blink was the most fucking awesome episode of the season which funnily didn't have much of our beloved M.C.
No one mentioned Gridlock yet but I really liked Brannigan. His accent and attitude was fantastic and really lit the episode up.
I actually didn't mind Rose or Martha since they at least had a spark of intelligence unlike Donna who played too well as a clueless annoying person. If they could introduce someone like Martha but with the scolding attitude of Donna, it'd be great.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
You have hit the nail squarely on the head. The Doctor and Jack's relationship bristles with tension on all fronts. The Martha and Doctor one simply doesn't work, which is a shame as she is potentially a decent character if you take the doe-eyed fawning away.Stark wrote:*waves fist*Hillary wrote:Blink and Human Nature/Family of Blood were the stand outs, certainly. Agreed. It's not like the Doctor has no romantic interests outside of his companions, is it. The assistant doesn't need to fall in love with him as well.Soontir C'boath wrote: If they could introduce someone like Martha but with the scolding attitude of Donna, it'd be great.

I like Martha. If she drops the soppy love for the doctor I'd like her a lot more. Seemed too artificial.
Donna I'm looking forward to, actually. I fully expect her to be less grating but still with that (in my mind much loved) capacity to tell the Doctor to fuck off once in a while.

Martha was wasted as a character and they seemed like the writers were trapped between having another Rose or completely different character (with the character of Martha falling between the gaps). As unfunny as Catherine Tate is I really do think a potentially more acid tongued, snarky and grumpy older woman will be a breath of fresh, after two mopey early to mid twenty somethings who still think they're 16...
