I remember something about it in the books, the impression I got was that warp drive was the diminuative little brother and precurssor to hyperdrive. I could be wrong though its been a long time since I read those books.

Xim the Despot is mentioned as having Warp drive using ships. And the region they are traveling in is mentioned as having once been a rich popular area back in the days when Warp drive was common because it was on the trade routes. With the invention of Hyperspace drive however, there was no need to stop there, thus the whole place fell in ruin.

Thus there are sectors in the Galaxy which like railroad towns of old, where only created because there was a trade route running through them. When the trade route moved, the areas died out.

I didn't recall the drive being described as Star Trek style warp - I'll have to go back and re-read those books. I'm assuming its one of these books in which warp drive is mentioned?

Han Solo at Stars' End
Han Solo's Revenge
Han Solo and the Lost Legacy

The Paradise Snare
The Hutt Gambit
Rebel Dawn

Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu
Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon
Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka

I'm assuming a sub light SW ship's weapons hitting an FTL ship at warp is out of the question?

The Han solo books and the entry's for Xim the Despot. All of the warp related information is from Xim's reign. Not something they use nowadays.

Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. Warp drives were used by Xim, more than 25,000 years before the present, and his "treasure" was also a huge stockpile of subspace crystals for communication, old military starship armour, etc, for reestablishing his fleet in exile, all of it obsolete.

Shortly after his defeat the development of early hyperdrives made the formation of the Galactic Republic possible.

About the effect of mass shadows on hyperdrives:
In Rogue Squadron, an X-wing book, Rogue Squadron is jumped by an interdictor. They force the interdictor to drop its interdiction fields and shunt the energy to shields and are able to jump into hyperspace, so there must be some other cause than the mass shadow when the hyperdrive is burned out.
Coyote: Warm it in the microwave first to avoid that 'necrophelia' effect.

The mass shadow in Hyperspace is caused by Gravity Lord Relvenous, thus higher gravity objects cast a bigger "shadow" into Hyperspace, hence the term, "Mass Shadow" Objects will small mass cast tiny shadows which Hypdrive's can ignore, objects with large gravity like moon's, planet's, Star's and various dead stars cast big shadows.

Thus once the interdiction field is shut down, the artificial gravity it was creating is gone as well. As per the second part of the X-wing series (The Wraith Saga) Interdiction Cruisers can manipulate the interdiction fields(Which are gravity) to act as a giant re pulser off any other object.

I could see one field in which the Warp engine would be popular.

Rich eccentrics and collectors. Like those with yachts that use nothing but sails, or people who collect old trains/ships. They'd be a niche, for the enthusiasts.

I was under the impression that it was subspace-based communication and sensor equipment, without reference to his time's faster-than-light mode of travel. The Rakatan hyperdrive predates Xim, certainly.

I understand the mechanism of the Interdictor and its field. What I'm saying is that there are cases where hyperspace jumps are interupted by mass shadows and the hyperdrive does not burn out.

I think it is the safety trigger which is mentioned in the earlier posts. So in the presence of mass shadows the hyperdrive switch of way before burning out, and I think it is a very rational feature, because losing your hyperdrive in the middle of nowhere is not so funny IMHO.
So the interdictor field works through the safety switch, but if you force your ship...

Ok, i was looking at this the wrong way. Point taken.

I vaguely recall somthing about mass shadows being solid objects in hyperspace, though that seems to be contradicted by the centerpoint books, which suggest that interdiction works by collapsing hyperspace bubbles, and can be countered by a hyperspace sustainer, but only barkara has those.

if we knew more about warp drive, maybe we could do something with it. For example, if it really warps space the way Albercurrie's design does (and all evidence indicates it does not) you could use to to generate lenses for some hideously powerful telescopes or lasers. But as they aren't used for that in Trek, they probably don't really work that way.
