I don't remember anything about agriculture, but they do primitive ranching with some bug (don't remember which) which they milk.

Neanderthals died out because their less nomadic families promoted interbreeding and they were living just where the Cro-Mags wanted to set up a farm or a camp. Though it is reasonably sure that they were probably sentient. Indeed, many higher animals, dolphins, whales, primates, some other mammals and even octopi and squids have very advanced thinking skills but probably less than human abilities when it comes to furthering them. It's not that dolphins don't have sentience, it's that they have little oppertunity to get smarter.
Personally I believe that if you gave trees the ability to think, bioengineer organs and neuro networks into them, then they would be very smart and possibly sentient. If you could find a way to connect them to the internet or a large enough computer directly then they could become smarter than humans. Though unable to do much more than be smart.

Note: I have not simply screamed that Vorlons are a superior race. Why? Vorlons are no longer animals in any connotation, we are beings of psyonic energy, beyond the need for bodies. But do not get snotty about being the leading species on your planet, you've virtually killed off everthing else that wasn't dead already.

It's been reported in a number of places. National Geographic reported that in a number of articles and for a long time.

Also, Chimpanzees in several places have been seen developing weaponary which they've used in intertribal and in tribal warfare and fighting. Planet of the Apes here we come.

I don't really consider the human race to be the most superior race. For one thing, unless we get our act together, the human race will most likely bleed off the environment and fall into disarray from the lack of resources and all that. A very nasty S-curve so to speak.

Other animals find a sort of natural equilibrium with their environment. They don't have technology, but they last.

Basically, I think the human race is a make it or break it race. Perhaps, if evolution were a sentient entity, the human race was an experiment to see what would happen if an organism was created that would have no restraint whatsoever in the amount of resources it consumes and how much it multiplies. Basically, either the human race, in its frenzy-like drive for advancement, suceeds in achieving whatever the "Ultimate Goal" is, or burns itself out.
