Interesting thing to think about as we use our screennames

Post by Shinova »

Karl S. Guthke (B. Traven) wrote:[B. Traven's] longing to vanish, in death, without a trace and to return to the elements from which he came echoes his lifelong hunger for anonymity, for disappearing without a name, or with a fictitious name, so that his true identity would be lost forever. The life of a pseudonym is the life of a dead man, of one who does not exist.

Have any thoughts?

Considering that many of us have told the general population of this board our real name, and some of us use our real names anyway (AHEM) I'd say this doesn't really apply.
Don't hate; appreciate!

I just like this name. My real name has been here long enough. (I'm telling what the F stands for, I don't like the family traditional name). I've got no problem with using my real name, it's just that pseudonyms are common.

I'm sure a lot of us like tha anonymity of the Internet, and would not do half the things we do if it could be traced back to us. I personally do not give out my real information, but that's generally because of security reasons.
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!

Or are they?

I'd hazard a guess that some trolls would have difficulty separating fantasy from reality nevermind knowing your true name and occupation, but they barely matter. :)

Anyone know DorkStar's real name? Doofus perhaps or Cleetus?

I'm a Nick anyway, I'm sure I've mentioned it often enough but Valdemar sounds cool for an alter alias.

DarkStar's real name is Robert Scott Anderson. This is common knowledge.

Hi, I'm off my rocker, but my friends call me Andrew.

Seriously though, I don't care to pubish my full name online either, mostly for security reasons. However, the people I correspond with online know my name by virtue of my email profile.

It's not really paranoia, just an effort to maintain a low profile to keep opportunists looking me over for easier prey.

I think so, at first. I had been more or less offline for a few years and besides forgetting about basic security, had yet to realize that the nature of the internet had changed considerably since the late '90's.

OK, just checked. Yeah, I did at first. But I'm a lot more careful now :)

Again, not a real big deal, just playing the statistics game to keep a relatively low profile.

At least youn can access ASVS well enough. My Uni firewall doesn't like news servers and I can only view by the tediously slow Google Déjá server. :?

Although I use a screen-name, my real name is ludicrously easy to figure out. It's posted all over, including SB.com, Mike's main site, and in the article I wrote about Ep. II in Mike's AotC discussion.

Due to the fact that my last name makes it extremely easy to find me, I don't post it over the internet. The only people who know what it is are people who I've emailed, which took a great amount of trust on my part for me to do. Being a chick on the internet is a little scary sometimes...
