Bah. Anyone who's ever gone to a Go-Kart track knows what's wrong with multiplayer gaming. It's great fun until the assholes show up.

Especially when they bring banana peels and homing shells. After playing lots of 4-Square as a child, I was prepared for such assholery in video games.Darth Wong wrote:Bah. I'm talking about reading the same book and people's comments on it (as in a classroom) while[/] you are reading it, not discussing it afterwards with people.Dooey Jo wrote:Shrykull wrote:But............wouldn't you rather read it on your own? Wouldn't you rather read it alone and not hear people's emotional reactions and discussions of the book, which could be not only be spoilers to parts you haven't read yet, but distracting, some of the best games I ever played were single player- legend of zelda series, and various other RPGs.
Very many people seem to come to message boards (like this one) after reading a book they found to be good (or crap) and want to hear what other people thought about it.

I know you're joking, but in my experience the Mario Kart games are pleasant in that there's very little scope for assholery; there's really no way to mess up the other players that isn't already a normal part of the game. That goes for Wesnoth too (and probably most similar strategy games) as long as you don't get stuck in a team game with an idiot for a partner, though in virtually all online games people quitting half-way through the game can be a source of much annoyance. I'm hoping this will be true of AC6 as well, as long as you're playing in deathmatch mode or in a team of people you know aren't assholes.VF5SS wrote:Especially when they bring banana peels and homing shells.

Yeah, old Mario Kart 64 didn't seem to have room for assholery. At least in multiplayer, the single player was downright frustrating to me.Starglider wrote: I know you're joking, but in my experience the Mario Kart games are pleasant in that there's very little scope for assholery;

All of them are actually. If you shoot them from far away enough, they aren't sent flying, they just stop. Fucking bullshit, is what it is! I've seen it happen, and I was not amused. And they've got to have an infinite supply of speed mushrooms, too...

Yeah, it was horseshit when they could magically speed up to get right on your ass every time you got a good lead for yourself.Dooey Jo wrote:That's because that fucker Donkey Kong is cheating!

Still, that multiplayer has the advantage that, if somehow one of the players finds a way to be a total asshole in the game, you can at least reach over and smack 'em. Sadly that isn't an option in most online MP games...

Single- and multiplayer games both have their places: you will never hear me cease to laud the virtues of The Legend of Zelda, but I will be the first to reach for a copy of Melee when friends are over.
As for good Single-player games, I would like to mention Majora's Mask: no, you couldn't influence everyone. But you could influence a lot, and they interwove so well that each three day cycle was unique.
