I ah, have a problem. I seem to be unable to use my avatar. It is 90x90, and fits all other requirments. What have I done wrong or not done?

Have you made sure it is a JPEG and under the KB size limit?

When I looked in my profile it's still saying that an avatar can't be bigger than 80 x 80 and no larger than 6kb in file size.

Also .jpeg/.jpg or .gif files are the only types I've ever gotten to work as avatars.

Yeah, it has to be a .gif or .jpg. Also, if it is 90x90, that is 10x10 to big. Oh yeah, almost forgot, check if it's under 6 kb.
