I love taking on Big Daddies. It's scary as hell (the Bouncer's are so damn fast!) but I've finally figured out a way to do it without losing too much life - Insect Swarm. When I got Insect Swarm 2 in Fort Frolic, I took down three Big Daddies and only one of them managed to even get a hit on me - hosing them down with armor-piercing .45 fire (or using the grenade launcher, whatever catches my fancy) while they flail about being stung by insects is great.
Some of that was luck though - I contrived to fight them where they wouldn't easily be able to charge me. The Big Daddies (Rosies) armed with guns are much harder to deal with and make me chew through First Aid Kits like it was candy.
How much ADAM do you get for harvesting as opposed to rescuing a Little Sister? I've rescued every one so far (just rescued the last one in Fort Frolic) - are all things equal considering you get 200 ADAM as a reward from Tennenbaum every few rescues, or is harvesting just better?
The sheer number of options during play in this game is fantastic - I love hacking turrets and security cameras and basically setting up a safe area in which you know the splicers won't be getting through alive. It's even easier to do when you've got the Physical Tonic that renders you completely invisible when standing still.
And then of course there's the weapon upgrades - I agonize every time I find an upgrade station because I'm not sure which weapon upgrade looks as cool/ will be the most useful. Given the amount of time I use the grenade launcher, I think it's shaped charge time.

Rosies are easy as hell if you're on a the PC. Just run circles around them while unloading your weapon of choice on their faces. The trick is to not get so close as to make them do a melee attack, and just far enough to get them to shoot you just with nails, but they trun very slowly so they always miss you. Also, my pimp shotgun with explosive buck eats Big Daddies.

You get 160 adam from harvesting IIRC, so it is slightly more profitable to do it that way (480 adam for 3 sisters as opposed to 440.) But you do end up with different plasmids if you rescue them: I think you can't get the hypnotize big daddy plasmid if you kill them.
I love hacking everything too. I have all the hacking upgrades so it is doable on any difficulty. I like to get people caught in the security cameras, and then when they're dead I zap the bots to hack them to follow me around. You hardly ever get hit when you have two of them with you at all times.
Where did you find that one?! That sounds awesome. I have played through the whole game already and I never did find it.It's even easier to do when you've got the Physical Tonic that renders you completely invisible when standing still.

Yeah, exploding buck makes it pretty easy. So does having two armored hide upgrades so you can take gratuitous amounts of punishmentShogoki wrote:Rosies are easy as hell if you're on a the PC. You get it via the research camera, IIRC it's the level 2 or 3 bonus for researching Houdini splicers.Natorgator wrote: Where did you find that one?! That sounds awesome. I have played through the whole game already and I never did find it.
Yes, I to am a hack monkey. That's a favorite method of handling Big Daddies for me since the Security Beacon plasmid doesn't draw any aggro from the BD. So you tos it, watch the camera lock on and have fun watching the mayhem or join in and help kill him.. even better if you're in a room with turrets.I love hacking everything too. Am I only the one who found the plot line a little disappointing? The main plot twist was just so obvious though I admit, having played System Shock 2 before may have something to do with Bioshock's plot predictability.
That and the final boss wasn't even that hard. Hell, the Elite Rosie was tougher to take down.

That's what I thought. Over the levels, you could swing a few extra tonic spaces or whatnot, I suppose.Natorgator wrote:You get 160 adam from harvesting IIRC, so it is slightly more profitable to do it that way (480 adam for 3 sisters as opposed to 440.) I'm pretty sure I got it from my camera taking happy snaps. I've got to take tons more.Where did you find that one?! That sounds awesome. I have played through the whole game already and I never did find it.

I saved every Little Sister in the game, and still could afford every Tonic, Plasmid, and Slot. The only thing I didn't do was max out my Health and Eve bars.Vympel wrote:That's what I thought. Ars technica did a check on this.Shadowhawk wrote:I saved every Little Sister in the game, and still could afford every Tonic, Plasmid, and Slot. One of our forum-goers, twinky, decided to find out. He graphed the difference between killing and saving the sisters in terms of the ADAM you receive, and he found that while at the beginning the bonus for killing is great, towards the middle and end of the game the bonus packages you receive for saving the little girls levels out most of the short-term gain.
While this decision does affect your ending, and whether you can sleep with yourself at night, if you're worried that by saving the little sisters you will be missing out on the ADAM needed to upgrade your powers, don't be. The game will take care of you either way.
Happy hunting!

The more important plasmid (hypnotise big daddy is pretty useless, since he'll only attack enemies if they hit you first) you get from the rewards is Armored Shell 2 - it's fantastic.

There's also another fun way to take them on, juke backwards and forwards until they chuck a proximity mine, then use your TK to sling it back at them.Shogoki wrote:Rosies are easy as hell if you're on a the PC. Or there's always the trap bolt. Mr Bubbles doesn't like electricity, so that'll screw him bad. I may have to forswear using them next time, because they make it too easy. That crossbow is a fucking monster, even a steeltip in the face will make a big dent in a Daddy's life bar.
I'll have to try out insect swarm next time, I really didn't use it (or many plasmids at all, really) much the first time..
One of the most fun things in bioshock is to fry a burning big daddy with the chemical thrower using electric gel, try itVendetta wrote: There's also another fun way to take them on, juke backwards and forwards until they chuck a proximity mine, then use your TK to sling it back at them.

Insect Swarms work wonders on the Bouncers. I've taken them down with armor piercing rounds from my tommy gun without them hitting me once, they were so distracted by the insects.

Electric buckshot seemed to put it on easy mode for me taking out the Big Daddies, especially in Arcadia. I actually ran one around a tree, getting right in his face, then shooting, doing good damage plus stunning him. When I needed to reload, I just kept running around the tree. Very anti-climactic, especially considering the ass-whuping the first 3 put on me, but electric buckshot was my preferred method.

Yeah, Electric Buck is the best Anti-Daddy weapon. With full research and the shotgun damage upgrade, it's about 1/8th-1/10th an elite's life, and stuns them up a decent length of time. (2-3 seconds)

I've just tried the demo. It was great all until I would have actually started to play that game itself. The lighthouse I've got to just fine. But once the trip with that ball thingy ends, the game freezes no matter what. Sometimes even before that.
I've checked the forum. PC users have an enormous amount of problems.
So yeah, I'll wait until it gets cheaper and buy it on Steam.

If you happen to have NVIDIA card, download the latest beta driver and install it. Before I did that, my Bioshock demo rebooted my computer every time when it started loading the second chapter following the ride to Rapture.
It's been a while since I was this much impressed by a game. Provided that I have time to play it, I'm buying Bioshock pretty soon. Excellent game design and environment. Gotta love Art Deco.

I had massive problems with the first Big Daddy fight; the Bouncer killed me, and while I was running back from the Vita Chamber the LS had managed to get lost somewhere (which was bizarre, since they usually stay close to the BDs) so while I was looking for her Bouncers were respawning almost one a minute; I ended up killing about four or five of them.
Also, I was a bit dissapointed that the "Becoming a Big Daddy ain't a two-way street, kid!" thing wasn't mentioned in the ending. (At least, not in the ending you get for harvesting the Sisters.)
