Galactica vs Firefly
Firefly and Galactica are two of the best scifi TV shows in last few years. Both share many similarities in relatively realistic low tech levels, little technobabble as well as how the ships and planets look since same company did effects. If both were in same universe I think Firefly is what civilian life in 12 colonies be like and galactica is like life in alliance military.
I liked Galactica more before but it increasingly became boring. Beyond Adama, Tigh, Baltar and the president there are not many interesting characters. On Firefly everyone is likeable, I even eventualy liked River who I found intolerable when I was introduced to Firefly by Serenity. In Galactica the plots also became less interesting after first season when I was not sure if the ship would even survive till next episode. Firefly has very few episodes but all of them are excellent. Unlike most TV shows I havent found a bad episode. So I still like Galactica since it has some great episodes among some boring ones but I prefer Firefly more for it's consistency,
What do you think ?

Both shows are overrated, but Firefly's TV incarnation was still enjoyable the whole way through (although the movie sucked,) while BSG became pretty much unwatchable for me after the second season.
Then again, Firefly didn't even get a second season, so it might've gone to crap by that time, too. BSG was still pretty awesome when it got to the point where its episode count matched Firefly's.

not to be a spamwhore, but, if you haven't yet, read. My. Fic.
I think I did a fairly decent depiction of a Firefly vs galactica spacebattle.
Stay tuned for later chapters. I promise dreadnoughts.

I personally found BSG almost completely undesirable. It was way too much of a soap opera that didn't seem go anywhere. That said, Firefly is probably the most overrated show in the past decade.
However, although Firefly is overrated, that does not mean wasn't good. I found it to be enjoyable, it kept me laughing, all of the main actors were excellent, and the writing was original. So I'd take Firefly over BSG, but keeping in mind that both series shouldn't be nearly as highly praised.

Firefly was cool, but not as apocalyptically cool as everyone seems to make out. And I'm tired of it. Sure, there are only 13 episodes, so maybe if it had run longer than I wouldn't have been overexposed to the little there was, but there's also a possibility that it would have lost its newness and fun and gotten bland. Unlike what some posters around here indicate, Battlestar still hasn't lost its appeal for me, and I wasn't bashing it in the beginning either.

I made the mistake of watching Serenity first, but I could still watch and enjoy FireFly for what it was, even though I watched the character and story development the wrong way round. But I enjoyed it for what is was and I see that many of FireFly's cast members turned up as guest stars on CSI as well (one of the best recent episodes co-starred Wash as a well intentioned paedophile and River was a murder victim in another). A pre-ENT Jolene Blalock turned up on an old episode of CSI as well...
And I haven't seen nBSG yet so I couldn't comment, but it hasn't escaped my attention that the series is already going downhill fast in it's third season, when it still not an old show. How so? I did, however, see many episodes of the original BSG when I was younger - of course it is horribly dated, very camp and spectacularly collapsed once the series moved to Earth in 1980 (AAAAAAHHHH!!!) but I found it a fun series that didn't take itself too deadly seriously (not unlike SG-1 in it's earlier more ropey but oddly better seasons).

I like them both, came into them both late and think people are being absurdly overzealous with criticism against the shows, probably in a reaction to the fanbase. I liked the story arcs in nbsg and like Baltar's character more than any others I can think of in sci fi. The assertion it's going "downhill fast" in the third season is just an overblown meme passed around between geeks that can't stop watching the show. I'd bet most of them would rely on vague feelings rather than cite specific parts of the third series they dislike, too.
As for which one I'd prefer all things being equal, I think I like nbsg more, just. I just like Adama and Baltar more than the Firefly characters.

Actually, Firefly was inspired by the American civil war.Stark wrote:Firefly was preachy in a wry, cowboys-in-space kind of way.

In recent years I tend to block out all rabid fanatics and zealous detractors around a fairly popular sci-fi series - if I like it and watch it, who cares what other people think? Honestly, the way some people fume over the current run of Doctor Who, you'd have thought it was the worst TV show ever broadcast if you paid any attention to their rantings...

As I said, I have never seen nBSG at all so I don't know how good it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if some long term viewers have grown tired of it after many episodes, even though there is likely no serious decline in story quality.
The Civil War is reflected in the Alliance and the war they fought against separatists on the outskirts of the colonized alien solar system, but everything else in FireFly reeks of Wild West.Nyrath wrote:Actually, Firefly was inspired by the American civil war.

Which doesn't at all preclude a heavy dose of Western either. The time period covered the by the "Wild West" actually has the American Civil War smack dab in the middle of it. And it is not at all uncommon for Westerns to feature characters that were veterans of the Civil War.Nyrath wrote:Actually, Firefly was inspired by the American civil war.Stark wrote:Firefly was preachy in a wry, cowboys-in-space kind of way.

I prefer Firefly if only because nBSG rapidly became an soap opera centered around Starbuck and her angst. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy Baltar and Adama.
As for the Civil War comparisons w/ Firefly, I heard that the more accurate comparisons was actually the American Revolutionary War. The Alliance set up the Colonies and left them on their own, while later attempting to assert authority over them. While this isn't an exact parallel either, it seems like more of a fit for the Revolutionary War than the Civil War.

Well regardless of what it was 'inspired' by, I'm not an American and they look like goddamn cowboys to me. To spell it out, Firefly is preachy in that irritating salt-of-the-earth homespun bullshit way, whereas nBSG has a whole different line of pretentious bullshit. However, I can watch and enjoy Firefly without throwing things at the TV, so I prefer it.
nBSG. Firefly is fun, but I do not think any other show has kept me on the edge of my seat like BSG does. Granted the 3rd season did go to far with the melodrama, but I did not mind the drama in the first 2 seasons.
I like them getting into political issues, and the main characters do not always choose the way me or you would. The sucide bombing of season three made me very uncomfortable, as it was supposed to.
Firefly was just fun, nothing I took that seriously.
(Plus a Battlestar falling through the atmosphere is defeniately the coolest thing I have seen in sci-fi television in a long time.)

Well, Josh Whedon has stated that he got the idea for the Firefly TV series after he read the book The Killer Angels. So I'd personally say that Firefly was inspired by the civil war, instead of saying that Firefly was 'inspired' by the civil war.Stark wrote:Well regardless of what it was 'inspired' by, I'm not an American and they look like goddamn cowboys to me. As far as all the horses and six-guns go, there are reasons for that.
