Saw this over at TV Shows on DVD.com last night but it was a little too late to post then, so here we go:

"The great ship Galactica, our home for these many years. We have endured the wilderness of space. And now, we are nearing the end of our journey. We have at last found Earth."

ABC cancelled the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series after 20 episodes: the original feature- length introductory story, and nineteen weekly episodes that included four two-parters and a double-length episode called "Greetings From Earth". However, they never *really* discovered Earth, "the 13th Colony", during the original series; the network put an end to the series before that, due to the huge cost of the special effects on the program.

However, after an extensive letter-writing campaign from fans, ABC tried to revive the show and bring it back in a way that was re-tooled to keep costs down. They never intended to change the cast as drastically as what ended up happening, but some characters were left off because they were deemed too "minor", and others were left off because the actors had already moved on, or were trying to. In the end, the new Galactica 1980 series only kept Lorne Greene as "Commander Adama", and Herb Jefferson Jr. now promoted to second-in-command "Colonel Boomer".

Boomer was so highly-ranked now, because the story took place 30 yahrens (years) after the events of the original show, and Apollo's adopted son "Boxey" - now insisting on being called by his proper name of Captain Troy - was now the lead Viper pilot. Kent McCord (Adam-12) played Troy, Barry Van Dyke (Diagnosis Murder) was ace pilot Lt. Dillon, and Robyn Douglass (Breaking Away) was a TV news reporter on Earth who was let in on the secret of the spacefarers and the threat from humankind's Cylon enemies. On Earth, Troy and Dillon were seen riding a vehicle that was a cross between a motorcycle and a Viper, in order to better blend in with the planet-bound inhabitants. The new show's changes didn't sit well with fans, and only lasted 10 episodes (included several multi-parters). The final episode, "The Return of Starbuck", was the best-loved story for fans, as it featured a story showing the fate of the original show's hero, played once again by Dirk Benedict.

There's a reason we're bringing you this brief history of this, the original "re-imagining" of Battlestar Galactica. Very reliable rumors have reached our ears about Galactica 1980 for DVD! The whispers we've heard say that the entire run of episodes from this incarnation of the show will be out on home video from Universal Studios, right around the end of the year...give or take a few weeks.

There are just some shows and movies that should never be burned onto a DVD because it is an absolute waste. This definitely being one of them. Not even nostalgia would make me rent this shit. I knew it was shit when I was watching it as an 8yo.

I think it's all because AOL stopped sending out all of those free CDs. People got used to using them for coasters and making mobiels out of them and now they are desparate for new stock. Galactica 1980 DVDs recieved as gifts should fit that bill.

Geez, I saw part of an episode of Galactica 1980 a few years ago and it was awful. The sets were a barely dressed version of the Universal Studios back lot and that was the good part.

There already was a 14-disc Planet of the Apes Ultimate Edition collection released last year that came in a small bust of Caesar. I'm looking at it on my DVD rack right now.

This was when the original Battle Star Galactica completely collapsed as a series - going back in time to WWII was completely trite. So were the flying bicycles, re-using stock footage from Earthquake! and that blond boy in his UFO that looked like the Milky Bar Kid.

People would only get it for the MST3K comedy value...

Special effects? What special effects?! They had a dozen or so space scenes that they just reused over and over. By the time I reached the end of the series I was bored to death of the battles.

As much as I love "The Return Of Starbuck", there's no fucking way I'd buy the whole DVD set for it. Maybe if I was a bit more wealthy. Then I could slowly and happily feed the other episodes into a shredder.

Who am I kidding? I'll be able to do that within a few weeks of this thing's release, when I can score it for $2.99. And even that would be steep for this piece of shit DVD set.

The most embarrassing thing is, the Cylons that land at the end leave a fully functioning Cylon Raider behind...yet Starbuck doesn't use it o leave the planet!

To be fair, you need at least two people to fly one. Furthermore, flying that thing to meet the Colonial fleet would probably result in him getting shot down. Whats stupid is that Starbuck didn't just repair "Cy" again. He'd done it once before afterall.

Wayne, what's scarrier, my mind reading abilities or the fact that we both remember an episode from one of the worse series ever imagined so well?

The Planet of the Apes movies are okay. I don't remember the tv show or cartoon well enough to comment on those. Certainly they all have to be better than Galactica 1980.
