This piece.
What is it? And if I go buy a new one, can I solder it back on myself?
If not, how can I recover my data?
Hard drive shorted out

Looks like a SMT resistor, but it could be a capacitor, and I can't tell which value it is. Best bet to recover the data: get a HDD of the same exact type, and transplant the circuit board.

No more then $500. I already checked out those data recovery services, and they cost upwards of $2000.Lisa wrote:there are companies that specialize in that service how much is the data worth to you?Dominus Atheos wrote:So what's the best way too get my data off of it? I found the same model for sale in several places, but the part numbers don't match.
It's the drive that I store everything I download off the internet. If I tried really really hard, I could probably replace everything on there, but it was a 500GB drive, and it was pretty much full, so it would take a long time to replace.
