Pools of Darkness

Post by consequences »

Has anyone out there actually beaten that damned game on the highest difficulty? I'm currently working my way through again, but the last version I had kicked me out just after I beat Gothmenes, and didn't even give me a chance to attempt the final challenge. Then, of course , the computer gets reformatted while I'm not looking, and guess what I hadn't saved to a separate disk.

First of all, consequences, it's so nice to see someone who still plays an SSI GoldBox game in 2003. I'm serious. The gameplay of ***most*** today's games really sucks so I resort to old games and abandonwares.

Well, about your problem, If you don't mind cheating, you can edit your characters using hex editor. It's quite straightforward.

Just remember never set the value of any attributes MORE THAN 22 (except for strength, it seems). From my experience, if you set the DEX value to 27, for example, the character will be pathetically slow as if the DEX has been down to 3 or so.

Of course, there is no restriction on editing hitpoints or levels.

I'm already doing the item shuffle, and I'm probably going to just clone my two best characters once they max their level. Right now my party is composed of two Ranger/Mages, one Mage who hasn't gained enough levels to get Ranger back yet, two level 31 Clerics, and a Paladin/Cleric. The only areas I still need to clear are the Drow, Kallistes realm, Moander, and Arcam and all the crap that follows him.

Hmm, how about this cheat:

While playing Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed (an SSI GoldBox also), he edited his characters' STR value to 255. Enemy who's hit by his characters DIE INSTANTLY! Besides, since his STR value is so damn high, every blow is guaranteed to hit.

Now, I think it should work on Pools Of Darkness since they use the same game engine.

Good luck.

I highly doubt it'd work. They're the same basic game engine, but the game mechanics are somewhat different, being based on the Buck Rogers and Ad&d 1st Edition systems respectivly.

Anyway, the scales for Ad&d stats go from 3 to 25. Of course, since many of the stat up items would be limited in that game (Or so one would hope), you'd never be able to achieve that normally. Though if I remember right, there's a Girdle of Storm Giant Strength somewhere for the STR 25.

Ahh...the good ol' days when game developers gave a damn about games?....the recent POR2 was so highly bugged and in general UTTER SHITE that I think everyone returned it more or less....it's not even worth a fiver you would pay for budget games....

Now the gold edition...that's a game, along with the EOB series up to EOB2

Speaking of old games and their remakes......does anyone here know anything about the original Neverwinter Nights?

Yes, there was. It ran on the same system as the original Gold Box SSI games, and apparently it was online only (AOL only I think, though it might've been compuserve), but aside from that, I know nothing.

Of course, if we want to go even further back, there was the Play by Mail (Not email, by *mail*) Neverwinter Nights game run by the RPGA.

Hell yeah. Though from what I've heard, that PBM game may have actually been running *alongside* the internet one.

I don't think of the item shuffle as cheating so much as just having my 20+ level mages duplicate the magical items like they could if this was a tabletop rpg.

Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if the first PBM campaign is still going....

It ended 4 years ago, when I was still playing Gemstone III.
