Apple conference over; iPhone price drop, all-new iPods

Post by Praxis »

Okay, so Apple's conference just ended. The iPhone just took a $200 price drop (8 GB model is $399, no word on the 4 GB model, may be discontinued).

Apple just announced a high end iPod Touch, which is an iPhone without the phone. It still has WiFi and a web browser and every other iPhone feature. $299 for 8 GB and $399 for 16 GB. So you can get a 16 GB iPod Touch or an 8 GB iPhone for the same price.

The iPod has been renamed to iPod Classic, and is thinner with an aluminum casing; now in silver and black, instead of white. That means the white iPod we all know is dead and gone. Same price points of $250 and $350 but instead of 30 and 80 GB they are 80 and 160 GB, and thinner than before. 40 hour battery life when playing music, woah. 7 hours video. That's the 160 GB model.

The iPod Nano is not as long, and thinner, but wider, and with a 320x240 screen capable of playing back video; Apple says it has the greatest pixel density they've ever shipped. 24 hour battery.

iPod Shuffles come in new colors. No price drop, Apple? Weak.

Oh yeah, and the iPhone and iPod Touch both got a new feature; iTunes. You can go on the iTunes Store and buy music.

And iPhone ringtones are $0.99; you have to re-buy music you already have! That's retarded; but since apparently iPhone ringtones are standard MP3's cut down to 30 seconds and placed in a special folder, there's already multiple third-party applications to do it for you, so there's no reason to pay.

The best part of it all? The reaction of people who bought iPhones. Half the MacRumors community is praising Apple and preparing their money to buy the new $200 cheaper iPhones, and the other half of the MR community is screaming bloody murder.

Cool. Can I get my $200 back for beta testing for them?
I'm so ******* pissed off right now...
I feel like I just got punched in the face. Fanboy tax indeed.
Ditto here. I plan to go by the Apple Store later today and raise some serious hell about this.

Well...I feel a bit upset...oh well, thats the "price" of buying the product right away
Screw you Apple, I paid $499 for my 4 gig iPhone less than a month ago. I'm pissed...
******* Apple... I'm so pissed off...

I'm 3 days past the 14-day return period. I want my $200 also. I must say as a first time Apple product buyer, I'm severely disappointed.

For that last guy, I'm rather amused that he bought an iPhone two weeks and three days before he KNEW Apple was going to be holding a conference to make new iPod-related announcements.

I think I might look in to buying a refurb 8 GB iPhone, it should cost around three hundred...especially now that it's been cracked to run on any network.

Yet more proof that "early adopter" is a polite term for "sucker".

Hmm... time to talk to my friend who works for Apple... :) It going down to less than $300 for them (probably) might help convince my fiancee to let me get one.

I've been told that the leftover stock in Apple Stores of the 4 GB model is selling for $300.

I'd imagine that refurbished 4GB models will probably sell online for $250 or so on Apple's online store.

I'm getting the feeling that by the time I finally buy an iPod, it might end up being almost a totally different product... :P

Also, if the new iPod Touch is a phoneless iPhone, how come its capacity is just a fraction of that in regular iPods? Wouldn't you think there would be a much better trade-off?

It uses flash memory as opposed to a HD (like the iphone), hence the disparity in capacities.

Okay, that does make perfect sense, then.

Huh, I was expecting at least until the Christmas season for the price drop of the older iPhones. Two months is rather short, even for Apple.

I don't know about the iPhone Touch, I guess it's a good option for everyone else who can't switch to AT&T.

That jump in the iPod capacity is amazing. The battery life has finally become serious- between the 40 hour charge life and the 80/160 GB boost, I'm glad I didn't get a video iPod in the past year. I got a MacBook + iPod deal a month or so ago and got an 8GB 2G Nano. That should be enough for at least a year, in time for the next generation of iPod.

Only two months since the iPhone release and Apple has a price drop? I can't imagine there being a drastic change to cheaper parts in that short amount of time. Apple had to have jacked up the price to bone the early adopters out of as much cash as possible.

It's also worth noting that Apple has invested very, very large sums of money into R&D for multitouch. I doubt iPhone will be the only product to utilize it, but Apple may have been trying to make the R&D money. They've sold about a million iPhones now and just dropped the price.

Also, maybe Apple finally realized that selling for a large profit AND locking people into a plan might be milking for just a tad too much :P

EDIT: Anyone notice that the iPod Touch doesn't have a Mail or Notes application?

It's more useful as a widescreen iPod Nano with a web browser, I suppose.

Wow, I saw some pictures of the new iPod nano and it looks squat and actually a little ugly:

Apple Nano site

The capacity is the same, the price is a little cheaper, and the battery life is a little longer. The only benefit is watching tiny videos. Yeah, I'm happy with the one I have.

But the iPhone got it's internet access from AT&T's cellular network, so the iPod Touch won't have internet access away from a WiFi Hotspot, and only 8gb of storage space? Fuck that, especially considering I could get a Video iPod with 10 times that space for $50 less.

I actually liked the first generation nano. I remember when I saw it for the first time, and noticed how small and sleek the thing was.

Apple employees get an iPhone for free, but they don't get a discount beyond that.

I'm not sold on the new Nano either, at least right now. I'd have to see one in person. But really, I like my Nano because it plays music. I have no need, I repeat, I have no fucking need to watch videos on a two-inch screen.

Talked to my friend who works for Apple... the 8GB iPhone is $299 with EPP. The 4GB is $224 while supplies last. Going to be a couple months if I even get one still...

You're missing a decimal place there. It's 16 GB. Not 160.

Yes. Because my dad tried, and it screwed up the thing and itunes wouldn't repair it and it caused a ton of grief.

EDIT: regular ipod w/harddrive: 160GB, unless I'm reading something wrong.
