Now, presume some act of plot (random Federation experiement with wormholes, Tau experiments with warp drives, Tzeentch farting, Q wanting to teach the Feds another fun lesson, etc) a wormhole/gateway of sorts pops into existence, connecting the Tau side edge of the Damocles Gulf with the Federation side of the Neutral Zone. Scouts from both ends poke their heads through, encounter ships of the other side, exchange talks and information and learn about one another.
For some reason, talks sour, and the Tau Etherals decide they'd like to spread the Greater Good to a galaxy that isn't plotting to eat them alive. The Federation decides it doesn't want to be absorbed into someone else's communist society. Hilarity ensues.
Now, who would win? The big problem I see the Feds having its that their firepower isn't as potent as that of the Tau, but they have a lot more territory than the Tau sept worlds, so they'd presumably have better industrial capacity. I'd also see the Tau as not being able to devote their full force to a war with the Federation, as they've got much bigger sharks in the sea on their end of the gateway as well.

The Feds do indeed have more worlds. It's a shame one Tau cruiser squadron could take on, say, the Dominion, about all of it, in battle, and win.

Been done. Feds get raped.
1) Feds suck on the ground (well, Trek in general sucks on the ground).
2) 40K has near Star Wars level firepower in space.
3) Federation industrial capacity isn't that impressive after you compensate for the massive size of 40K vessels. Fed industrial capacity won't survive Tau attacks.
