Being a poor student, pretty much all of my stuff is 'scabbed' off other people, normally my parents. However, one of my friends has donated me his old PC. I had to provide the hard drive, and external stuff though.
rAnyway, after installing it, the computer didn't detect any audio devices, despite there being on board soundd and a soundcard plugged in. After a few attempts at installing the drivers for one or the other, the screen suddenly had a large number of small black lines horizontally on the screen. I could move the mouse a bit before the computer stopped entirely. Now, the computer turns on, but nothing appears on the monitor.
What reasons could there be for this?

If the sound card and video card are inbuilt, it might be something screwing with the motherboard. Check your settings to make sure your friend hasn't over clocked the thing as well for that matter. And double check the on board sound card is enabled and the add on card is properly seated (might want to play moving it to another PCI slot as well)
