Modern fighters is all well and good but it's just no skill needed if you have an F/A-22 or EFA that can kill at 40+ klicks. I always go in for a guns, guns, guns knifefight with missiles off.

Plus no modern jet fights at supersonic speed, wings hate that stress.

If you like WW2 air-to-air combat and like the thrill of fighting against other people, then try Aces High, by HiTech Creations. Game is free off there web-site, but you pay 14.95 a month to play against others. Thats where the fun is.

Now, I have been playing flight sims since Lucasfilms released Battlehawks 1942 for the PS2. Played every new one until Everquest came out, then started on that. Got bored with EQ 2 years ago, started playing Dark Age of Camelot until I got fed up with Mythics lies and character Nerfing. Did a search for new flight sims, found Aces High in mid november and have been hooked.

Graphics are not as sweet as those in IL-2, but there is something exciting as you spot a bogey, turn your nose to him, merge and the duel is on. Now picture this with as many as 50 planes all in your airspace at the same time.

Hmm, reminds me of B-17 Fling Fortress: The Mighty Eigth which is super realistic too but limited in planes to fly and campaigns.

I prefer dogfights to bombers more.

Also that Hawker Tempest pic, wasn't the Tempest the radial engined brother of the Typhoon or did the earlier ones have the same engine config? I always forget this.

Both the Tempest and the Typhoon took an inline piston engine at first, but I think some versions of the Tempest were made with radial engines.

I remember seeing a late mark Tempest owned privately which used to belong to the RAAF and fought in Korea. Huge prop and loads of thrust, practically the best turboprop fighter in Korea I've heard.

I just did some research on that plane, and it seems it's rather amazing for a 1945 aircraft. It had a low radar profile to start with, combined with radar-absorbing plywood skin. The flight ceiling was around 52,000 feet (!) and it had a projected range of about 1,000 miles with outboard fuel tanks. It was also a lot faster than the Me-262...

In 1945, when American troops overran the factory it was being developed at, they found the 229 V3 prototype, almost ready for flight testing. The V1 and V2 prototypes had already undergone flight testing, although IIRC both were destroyed as a result of mechanical failures.

Goering had already given them the go-ahead to build 20 combat-ready models, and the factory was prepared to do so. Parts for the fighter-bombers were scattered all over the place.

In short, it got a lot farther in development than most of the Luftwaffe 1946 aircraft. If that thing had entered service, it wouldn't have been a be-all end-all, but it would have been bad news for the Allies... ::shudder::

Are you sure it wasn't a Hawker Sea Fury?, they were used in Korea ( some even managed to bring down jet-powed Mig-15's). The Sea Fury looked alot like the Tempest.

This was a late model Tempest I'm sure but was probably upgraded to Sea Fury status e.g. engine and undercarriage etc.
