Star Wars mythology/symbolism etc ?

Post by CosmicWarrior »

I have been fascinated by these themes with regards to Star Wars for a long time now. Do any of you know where i can get a thorough explanation of the mythological aspects of SW, and the use of the esoteric/mystic aspects in it ?

For instance, if you look here http://www.briandemilio.com/matrix.html, then you will see an explanation of the matrix exactly along those lines, and this is what i want to find with regards to star wars.

Thanks in advance

To get an overall background, I'd recommend Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces The documentary featuring Campbell, The Power of Myth also contains segments about mythology and its relationship to Star Wars.

Yes. I saw the power of myth. It's excellent. But it only covers a little. :(

There was a special on the History channel, and I can't remember what it's called, but it went into what influenced Lucas and helped him shape the Universe.

On a simpler level, I think that Star Wars owes much of its success to its signature prop: the lightsabre. Even kids who aren't huge Star Wars fans think lightsabres are ultra-cool. It's the ultimate fusion of future and past, technological and mythological.

I found a guy on Youtube that swears Star Wars is actually endorsing Nazism, you see because the Empire represent Nazism (Despite the costumers basically saying they wanted a Nazi kind of look because everyone knows the Nazis were bad), and the Millenium Falcon flying over the Star Destroyer represents the Thousand Year Reich and the Falcon of the Third Reich, but don't tell him that it's actually an eagle that's been used in Germany as an icon for hundreds of years.

Is he aware that the United States uses a bird of prey very heavily in its iconography as well?

Or that, entertainingly, the Rebellion's award ceremonies are shamelessly ripped from Triumph of the Will?

He missed the part where the bird used on the German Coat of Arms is called the Realm Eagle, not the Realm Falcon, I doubt that even occured to him.

Reminds me of an amusing scene in the second volume of the Hellsing manga, where a vampire made a reference to "Millenium" and they started poking into the Star Wars Fan Club when all the other leads ran dry, because of the Millenium Falcon.

To define the ultimate irony, Hellsing discovered that Nazis were behind all the craziness later on.

that being said, I know who you're talking about - I think I argued with him a while back, but that may have been the other retards on Youtube.
