I guess crayon drawings of penises are more damaging to a child's psyche than seeing people getting their toes snipped off with garden shears.
I've never met someone who can make a cogent argument for the belief that children are harmed more by images of sexuality than images of brutal violence, yet it is a very common attitude anyway. When asked to defend it, people just mumble incoherently and change the subject, yet they continue to expose their kids to violence while carefully "shielding" them from sexuality.

Of course, oppose that kind of thinking, and you are a dirty pedophile. I took my brother to see Superbad. Really bad humor, but he handled it. Loved the movie. I wouldn't think twice about something like Superbad, which really has almost no blood (except for the poor main characters leg :P), no deaths, (hell, there's never a point where you think the main characters are in mortal danger,) and very little actual violence that's not covered in slapstick. And guess what? He's not scarred for life. In fact, he's better for it, 'cause at least he got to laugh for two hours.

As the father of a soon-to-be-4 year old, I have doubts over just when I can let him see The Adventures Of Jonny Quest, but I can't even imagine the sort of malfunction in a parent's head which lets them think they can take their two kids, four and younger, into a movie featuring prolonged scenes of brutal, bloody torture in which people get their bits chopped off and blood sprays all over the place. I mean, this is pretty fucking basic —the same way you're supposed to know without being told that it's not a good idea to let baby drink the Mop n'Glow. Past that I have to wonder about the sort of people who find torture porn entertaining in the first place.

Not easy growing up when your parents are sociopaths. I pity those poor kids.

It does say something a little disturbing about our society's collective mental health, doesn't it?

At this point, Peak Oil almost seems like a blessing in disguise. I don't suppose there's any chance that we can restrict breeding to responsible people or at the very least impose restriction on parents everywhere to keep them from doing obscenely immoral things like this to their children?

Well personally I don't think someone should be bringing their kids to that type of film unless they want them to grow up being a psychotic murderer.

Also I have to say on a side note I honestly don't think that the person who wrote the letter was a "minority" unless they have some serious identity issues or their white and want to seem PC. In all my personal experience when talking about my fellow black folks I've never used the word "minority" nor has anyone else I know of any melanin variety. I've only seen the word minorities used when speaking about all minorities as a group. Just my little tid bit.

Apologize for the double post. I meant to include it with the first one but yet again I hit submit instead of preview.

That's retarded. Start proposing the idea of who's "responsible" or "smart" and you get onto a train of who's better than who. As much as it's annoying to see idiots on parade all of their kids aren't going to be morons. Besides not every dumb thing a parent exposes their kids to once in a while will necessarily have a negative effect on them. Let people raise their kids in peace.

I watched stupuid slasher shit from the 80's from the time I was 8 until around 20, and every now and then will watch some new POS that comes out. I'm not a psycho murderer. I am desensitized to film and TV violence and gore, though. Of course when I see an actual occurence of violence I have a very different reaction than when I see something from a movie.

What happened to the brilliant idea of "ask a friend, mom or granpa to watch your kid for the night"?

Even if you don't live near to your family, you should have a friend who will gladly watch your kid on a Sunday night for a few bucks. Unless you associate with irresponsible idiots, he/she should do a good enough job.

Remember, these are people who take their kids to torture porn movies. What are the odds, you think, of their friends NOT being irresponsible idiots?

I was allowed to watch Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, Predator and shit at a very young age - in fact I kept on rewinding the tapes until they broke.

But when a man and a woman kissed or made out in a scene, my parents almost always told me to cover my eyes.

Goddamn that must be why I'm so fucked up right now :(

Amen to that: when I was a kid, my family was trying to watch Beverly Hills Cop, when suddenly my mom realized that, horror of horrors, there was a scene in a strip club. Clearly, the vague chance of my seeing a nipple somewhere in the background was too horrible to contemplate, so she jumped up, parked her fat ass in front of the screen, and made such a fuss that we ended up never finishing the movie (sex, rather than graphic violence, is also why she vetoed The Last Boy Scout). Hell, I'm 22 and she still glares at me when I don't cover my own eyes. Try to tell that level of attempted sexual repression has nothing to do with my being a complete pornhound today, I dare you.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I had a friend who loved the James Bond films, but he was always forced to fast-forward through the sex scenes. Nevermind all the war films he got to watch.

What happened to "wait till it comes out on video?" My wife and I made a lot of sacrifices for our children. We didn't go on a real vacation for ten years. We went to maybe one movie a year. So you'll have to forgive me if I don't feel much sympathy for these shit-eating assholes who drag their kids along to torture-porn movies because they can't find a sitter.

Well, of course. If you can't find a sitter and absolutely have to see such utter shit (though I have no idea why you'd want to...) then you can rent it six months later.

For some reason, though, I suspect the kind of "children first" reasoning is quite rare amongst this type of people.
