Cleric Preston vs. Mr. Smith
Okay Cleric Preston of the dystopian sci-fi flick Equilibrium
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erFz8jBzkhQ
vs.
Mr. Smith from the insanely over the top action film 'Shoot 'Em Up'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk-euRTLSkE
Fight 1: Gun on Gun. Both are armed with familiar pistols, gunfight takes place in a gun warehouse so plenty of reloads will be on hand.
Fight 2: Both combatants are armed with 1 carrot each.

Mr. Smith appears to understand the basic concept of "cover" which is more than we can say for Cleric Preston, who relies on his "Gun Kata" bullshit to dodge gunfire from "traditional lines of fire" and shoots blindly at idiots who stand out in the open. (then again, all of Mr. Smith's enemies are the same way)
I think it'll come down to Mr. Smith doing one of his crazy gun fu moves, which Cleric Preston's Gun Kata obviously hasn't taught him how to dodge, and Preston dies hard.

Wrong Smith.Sam Or I wrote:Mr. Smith takes it.
Maybe Preston vs. one of the lower level awakeis. Preston vs. Mouse is most likely a little more fair.

Despite the fact I absolutely love Cleric Preston, this Smith character has really unnaturally good aim and doesn't attack from any predictable angles whatsoever. I think that John Preston is certainly a formidable opponent, but that Smith is just going to be so unpredictable that it's possible he'd get a lucky break. Preston is at his best when he's diving INTO a gunfight that's already started, so that he can use his Gun Kata magic to counterfire and avoid being in danger. Against a single, nonfixed opponent who likes to leap around, ride on things that aren't meant to be ridden, and seems unable to miss, I think he's gonna take a hit due to overconfidence...
Gun on Gun: Smith, due to the fact that the warehouse is full of wierd shit to jump off of or hide behind. One shot is basically a kill, and though we rarely see Clerics miss a target completely, John leads his target with spray from his automatic pistols. That could work in his favor, but Smith doesn't seem to give anyone more than a split second to shoot at him. Sadly, I'm giving this to Smith, unless he decides to be clever (and out of character) enough to lay an amush in a dark room or something that lets John have all the advantages.
Carrot War: Preston, hands down. The Clerics are excellent gunfighters, but fantastic hand-to-hand combatants. If Smith ever got within arm's reach, even if Smith is holding some variety of automatic weapon, shotgun, several pistols, or a sword, Preston is just going to dismember him.

Sorry guys.. who's Mr. Smith?
Also, we're not aware if Clerics have a different repertoire of tactical approaches to different sorts of adversity. The (brief) showdown between Dupont and Preston at the end of the movie did seem different from the rest of the Cleric's killing sprees.
Considering they also spar with melee weapons and such, perhaps they have specific doctrines for approacing ranged one-on-one combat with similarly over-the-top opponents.
I'd need to see this Mr. Smith in action before I yammer on any further, of course.

Thing is Smith's exactly the sort who isn't going to get into a big hand-to-hand battle with him and is far more likely to ambush him and stab him in the eye at some point. That and he's at the very least got more vegetable based combat experience.Covenant wrote: Carrot War: Preston, hands down. Just saw that film ('Shoot Em Up'). The hero is actually Stark, just with an insanely thick character shield (of the 'massed fire from tens of mooks with SMGs at close range cannot touch him' variety) and the ability to sustain three pistol shots a second while doing acrobatics and score a fatal hit with every single one. Oh and a bizarre love of carrots. Though Stark may have that too, I'm not sure.
I imagine he easily wins this fight, simply due to being a deliberately wanked out parody of an action/gun-fu hero.

Oh... so this isn't the Brad Pitt Mr Smith of "Mr & Mrs Smith"?

Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Gun kata can suck my nuts. The foes Smith and Preston both face aim like total shit, true. But how are we supposed to approach this? This is SDN where character shields don't matter for shit. Or at least, both Smith and Preston are leading men so their character shields cancel each other out (or favor Smith for being an action hero parody.)
So it goes like this: all the people Preston fought aimed like ass, and Preston likes closing in really close to hit people with the butt of his pistol, while Smith aims like a god. Preston aims good but not as good as Smith: either he likes closing to melee range, or he does it because his aim sucks beyond five feet and he's more effective at melee range. Either way, game over Preston. Plus like someone else said at least Smith takes cover.
If it was more than just pistols Smith would take it completely... that one parody of the Bourne Ultimatum had Smith falling from the sky spraying his SMG and hitting ten guys at once while Preston takes his time killing the guards in the final scene of Equilibrium and apparently is so in love with his pistols he doesn't want to go for weapons with a higher rate of fire even when outnumbered.
