GReat Barrier Reef trip (56k uberdeath)

Post by Spin Echo »

My partner, friend of my partner, Spyder and I spend several days on Lady Elliot Island on the great barrier reef. In addition to the aquatic life pictured here, we also saw from the porch in front of our room dolphins and whales jumping about. You could also hear the humpedback whales singing to each other while snorkling. It was an absolutely amazing experience (apart from the half hour we thought my parter had drowned or been swept off to see of something). I'd thoroughly recommend a visit there if you can make it.

I just got my underwater photos developed so here they are in no particular order. Unfortunately, the colours are nowhere near as vivid as in real life, but you get an idea. I'll get around to posting the digital camera pics a little later

Small sting ray with blue spots (kinda hard to tell from the picture)

Image

A black tipped reef shark down in the corner there

Image

A small reef shark close up to shore (in about only 12 inches of water) feeding on something

Image

They had bright blue starfish

Image

Couple of parrot fish

Image

Cool looking coral.

Image

More cool coral

Image

To give you an idea of the quanitity of fish in the reef

Image

A cute little squid. He was rainbow iridescent, but unfortunately that doesn't show up on film.

Image

I don't remember these fellows names

Image

A sea cucumber and a brain coral

Image

Parrot fish

Image

More coral

Image

Parrot fish

Image

Butterfly fish, I think they were

Image

Image

Parrotfish with some Sergeant Majors around.

Image

I like parrotfish

Image

Turtle

Image

My partner's friend. I'm surprised he didn't killed with all the poisonous things (turtle excepted) he kept poking and proding.

Image

Picasso Trigger fish

Image

Some big fish toward the bottom of the reef

Image

Huge stingray that was sitting on the bottom of the reef. He was about 5 meters away to give you as estimate of his size from the picture. He had one wicked looking barb on his tail

Image

Huge stingray now moving from his location on the bottom of the reef

Image

Moon Wrasse

Image

Turtle again

Image

Image

Giant sea urchin

Image

Giant clam

Image

Cool little neon blue fish that were all over.

Image

A little lizardfish which uses its fins to crawl along the bottle of the ocean. Score 1 for evolution.

Image

Can't remember this chaps name

Image

Angelfish I believe

Image

A whole school of Sergeant Majors

Image

Lots of little tiny black and white fish swimming around the coral.

Image

My partner petting a turtle

Image

Me and a turtle

Image

More little blue fish.

Goddamn, some of those underwater shots are fucking Amazing  .
Hope you had as much fun as it seems you had, and did you make sure not to touch the coral or to swim to close to the "floor"? (And thus kicking up rocks, sand).

I had a wetsuit because I'm always cold, so I was very buoyant and stayed at the surface of the water.. In general, people tried to avoid the ocean floor, as that's where poisonous things can lurk (stingrays, stonefish, etc).

It's a world unto itself below the sea, and the sheer uniqueness of it boggles this surface-dweller's mind.

Those are some really nice photos.
