DETROIT -- A U.S. Justice Department official has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit over the weekend to have sex with a minor.

John David R. Atchison, 53, an assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Detroit Monday afternoon.

An undercover officer posed as a mother offering her child to Atchison for sex, according to police.

Prosecutors said Atchison flew from Pensacola, Fla., to Detroit on Sunday intending to have sex with the 5-year-old girl.

He was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

He is charged with enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

According to authorities, Atchison made contact with a detective working undercover for the Macomb County Sheriff's department's.

The detective, acting as the child's mother, allegedly arranged a sexual encounter between Atchison and her 5-year-old daughter, police said.

In deposition, detectives said Atchison suggested the mother tell her daughter that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents."

The undercover detective expressed concern about physical injury to the 5-year-old girl as a result of the sexual activity. Detectives said Atchison responded, "I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice."

The undercover detective asked how Atchison can be certain of no injury. He responded, "Just gotta go slow and very easy. I've done it plenty," according to detectives.

Atchison, a member of the Florida bar association since 1984, lives in Gulf Breeze, Fla., near Pensacola.

He is president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, a youth athletics organization.

He described himself online as a family man. His wife is a science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Department and the FBI were a part of the investigation.

Atchison remains in federal custody and a detention hearing will be held on Tuesday.

Background: Gulf Breeze, Florida, where this sick bastard's from, is a profoundly conservative and very red community. I'll leave you to figure out the likely political affiliation of this scumbag.

What's more disturbing than the idea that this guy has merely done this several times, but that there's a community that supports this kind of behavior, and makes victims accessible, since that means there's more than just him out there going at this.

I suspect they will crack him, further I'm certain that they have already cracked other offenders. Consider how 'closed' this little fucked up social network is. It's not as if you can Google 'mothers offering their babies for sex' and find a site with all the contact details.

Given his statement of having done it 'plenty of times', it's obvious that these networks are pretty 'exclusive' in order to protect the fucked up perverts (but not the children) from getting caught.

Also, in nearly all arrest cases details are nearly always given in the media 'found on MySpace etc, ' while in this case no detail is given at all how the sting was set up - that just smacks to me that the police have cracked a network, and they are playing their cards very close to their chest in order to not scare the other fuckers out of the pond.

It is my hope that more of these cunts get caught, the sooner the better.

A slight tangent, but as this is the same subject as several other threads up at the moment:

A lot of the molestation that occurs is either within the family, or very carefully set up beforehand by the perpetrators. In other words it's generally *not* random strangers in public locations. Being paranoid and slapping everyone who is witnessed taking the hand of a child not directly related to him/her as a sex-offender is not the way to fix this.

Be an overbearing goon with your children's activities on the internet. Find out who the hell they're talking to. And if they're arranging a meeting with someone they talk to online, you damn well find out exactly who the fuck it is...and go with your kid to this 'meeting'.

Well this solves my moral dilemma. I generally don't support the death penalty, but people like this really strain my conviction on that position. I have no problem whatsoever cheering on his death, though.

My only regret in this guy's death is the loss of any information about others of his kind, and those that procure for them.
