Wouldn't the enclosure be "better," though? (Since the end goal is the same.) Looked up some on Newegg.

After about a week, I was able to finally recover and back up all of my data, after which a destructive recovery (reformat of the main partition + reinstallation of factory software) cleared up the situation, and now I'm typing this from the laptop.

Once again, I kneel to you, General Zod, for recommending Knoppix. It was (oddly enough?) the only Linux LiveCD distro mentioned here that would read my hard drive, for some reason. While it would keep "dirty mounting" the main partition, thus making it read-only, this was enough for what I needed.
