Probably because it's so different from a regular RTS. (Going by the demo) It has a system of perpetual comeback, an enemy close to defeat is always still able to win. As you take the points closer to the enemies deployment area they're more likely to fight you away from it, with fresh undamaged units, while your reinforcements have to cross the map. TA horders can also use a nuke to rebalance things a little.
For the most part as well the units are the same for each side, just with different skins.
Compare this to a regular RTS where there's at least a few minutes of base building first and then half the battle is the winner cleaning up with no chance of the loser coming back.

The attitude seems to be that 'depth' and 'tactics' == basebuilding and teching. It has neither, so it's just a war or maneveur with prioritisation, teamwork, and a constantly shifting battle.
It's sad that this attitude has become so predominant in the RTS industry that the people who complain about WiC have utterly no idea what the game is based on. "Zomg no base building means no strategy!" "Haha I know the user interface better than them therefore I am the smarter commander!" I wonder what would happen if they tried to play Medieval Total War.

I've encountered people on WiC who think it's weird that at any moment, the losing team could turn the battle around and win. It's actually become a generally accepted brain bug in the RTS genre that you are SUPPOSED to lose the map after the first few minutes.
I'm enjoying the "Tug of War" matches immensely. A bit of a paradigm shift.

Its goddamn hilarious to be playing multiplayer now with all those beginners filling the servers who didnt dedicate much time on learning the proper tactics by playing the demo. I managed to score a 2044 point round on the Bridge assault map. The peeps on the Soviet side didnt seem to have a clue how they should go about it. They kept running these huge columns of tanks and infantry in nice bunches on the bridge without practically any air cover. I lost count how many times I made a quick hit&run with 5 Heavy Attack Choppers against those columns while occasionally popping to the enemy rear to take out all those arty pieces that lacked any anti-air cover. I even succeeded in once carpet bombing the bridge while it was full of enemy units and dropping a FAE on the bridge assault point. The funniest thing about the entire shebang was that not once did one of the hostile players think of grabbing some medium choppers and coming after me.
NATO heavy arty + unexperienced players = pure delight. I found this out while playing that coastal town map that appeared in the Campaign, cant recall the name but not Seaside anyways. Once again all those nice people on the other side obliged and gave me a full range of targets sitting on perimeter points fat, dumb and happy. Ofcourse, I cheerfully took advantage of this and proceeded to educate those folks why its a good idea to keep moving. I also found out during this round that most people on the servers right now dont really know how to use Airborne Infantry. This one guy tried desperately to hit me with the Airborne Infantry arty call-in, but when I went too far from the forest where he was keeping that unit, he actually came into the open to try and hit me with the arty. At that point it was simplicity in itself to simply drive over that airborne infantry with my arty.
Well, everyone should enjoy the current state of affairs as long as it lasts. Sooner or later even the beginners will start to figure out some rudimentaries of tactics.
"The ones they built at the height of nuclear weapons could knock the earth out of its orbit" - Physics expert Envy in reference to the hydrogen bombs built during the cold war.
The whiners are the best part. I've only played one multi game so far, and while I was on the hill with two armour players winning the match, this arty guy with his one heavy arty off by itself getting shot at by a medium chopper is on VOIP crying 'zomg you fail get over here and save me moron'. I mean, there's a heavy AA 200m away from him, and I'm kinda tied up winning the match. Clearly I should save him from a slow, slow death!

I hate Tug of War right now because whenever I play it seems like only me and my friend actually understand how to win. The amount of retards that sit on the edges of the points, or push past the points instead of capping them is just so annoying.
The lack of teamwork is amplified in tug of war as well. When 6 players can't pull themselves together to cap the 1 point that me and my friend don't hold between us is really depressing.

I've picked up the collector's edition today, and as soon as I've cleared enough space on my hard drive and set all the graphical settings to '5 year old with crayons', I'll get back to you. I'm tempted to run around as infantry guy, thought I fear that I'll get most of the massacred in seconds.
Ah well.

My experiences with the VOIP is that it's either a pair of nasal Americans whining and saying useless things like 'kill that tank' and 'on the left', or guys whose mics don't work and send babble or static.
Thats what I experienced, too.
...and my Micro isn't working since WiC doesn't want to recognize my usb headset. Why would anyone design a voice chat that does not let you choose your input and/or output device?
An SDN match could be fun. Shockingly, I've actually got WiC running. It looks... a little awful, but it's playable. In the first few missions, the unlimited use TAs are fun. I sort of accidentally levelled the training airbase, most of Seattle and a fair bit of that village. Hehe.

I have a brand new Intel quad core based system with a Geforce 8800 GTS, and hell yeah am I getting this game so that I can watch my card barely even heat up, but can someone tell me what the collector’s edition actually gives you for the extra bucks?

The Headphones are good, and the box is snazzy.

Well that’s cool, a collectors edition with something more then a making of DVD, but since I already have a headset I'd basically be paying for a piece of the Berlin wall, think I’ll just get the normal one.

The headset is only in Europe. Not the US.
Also, my copy arrived on Tuesday, somebody on SA posted a code(CONFLICT) for free overnight shipping from Gamestop's website, which I took advantage of. Look me up on Massgate as InstantSunris
Well, I didn't know that, living in the UK and all. They're certainly nice headphones, though. Better than my usual £1 POS set.

Well that was over quick, I just beat the single player camp[aign and while good it was well short. It also ends with an obvious set up for the expansion pack.

We will nevar forget that day! Or that other day when the Soviets nuked American soil!
Also, I took the liberty of making a SDN clan, called "StarDestroyer.Net." PM me with your massgate name if you want an invite.
EDIT: We are also looking for logo suggestions for the SDN clan.

Well that just cemented that there's a bunch of retards who think WiC is like every other RTS. My team was accused of rushing on an Assault map.
At first I though he was saying 'Damn Russians' as we were playing USSR, but when I looked closer he was saying 'damn rushers'. On a map where you have a set time limit to complete a set number of objectives he called us 'rushers'.

I've played assault maps where nobody on the team took even the FIRST point. Then they whined because in the next round, the other team took that point in 30s and won.
Who thought 3 support and 2 air and 3 infantry was good for assault?
