VMWare Server

Post by Stile »

I've just downloaded and installed this program last week. In case nobody knows, it's a little program that runs virtual machines on your OS so that you can run different OS's and try them out without screwing around with your current installation.
I'm trying out Ubuntu, Mandriva, and Open SUSE Linux distros. Does anybody have any preferences of distros or tricks that they think I should try out with this program? I seem to prefer KDE over gnome for ease of use with these distros.

I've found virtualbox to be faster than VMWare for emulating a desktop OS.

KUbuntu is the KDE version of Ubuntu. Never really liked KDE though, since the more important apps are written in GTK and it's easier to go w/ an all-GTK/GNOME desktop for consistency than an all-QT/KDE (the only QT/KDE apps I run are SMPlayer and ironically Virtualbox).

Keep in mind the 3D eyecandy of all the newer Linux desktops won't run inside a virtual machine.

In my opinion, if you want speed all of the virtual machine stuff around besides parallels on OS X (full dx9 support) has terrible gui performance, and your better off running your X server on the host with xming or X if its unix-like.
