Karl Marx's greatest (albeit not only) mistake was his failure to account for human nature, and that's something he shared with Trekkies, or so it seems. People just aren't built that way; the idea of totally eliminating the hoarding and possessive instincts from human beings is completely preposterous. Sure, you can get the occasional person to take a vow of poverty, but that doesn't mean you could actually change the nature of the whole species.
But Wong! havn't you heared TNG? Humans HAVE "evolved" as a species and no longer have all those dirty desiers of Greed and a Possesive nature!
Utterly, flat out wrong, as proven any time anybody owns anything. Hell, Data's got a cat. That's possessive, isn't it?

The point stands, weather it is by boasts, or as propaganding... there are times inTNG when it is said "Humans Have Evolved" Do I really believe this Of course not... But Trekkies will cling to it as proof of how "superior" Trek humans and by extension, the Federation is.

You point out to them how Trek characters don't even know the meaning of the word.

Trekkies will cling to anything, as demonstrated by the likes of RSA and what have you. Doesn't change the validity of the point (or rather, the lack thereof)

so where did the no money idea come from? I mean it would be understandable in ST 4, Kirk may have had money on him but i would be valuless in American society.

Gene Roddenberry (sp?)

TOS was not exactly how Roddenberry envisioned Star Trek. More like TNG.

A good deal from TNG or specifcally Picard. He would at times in some seasons tout the whole line about "Evolving beyond movey". Strangely, they had no problems interacting with Ferengi, other civilizations, and other scenarios that demanded money. In fact they flung around some bauble called credits.

As for TOS, they knew about money and in fact commented of being paid and all that jazz.

Clearly you have never owned a cat. The possession is the other way around.

The problem is the utterly schizophrenic way things are portrayed in the series because people either didn't think them through or didn't do their research. In theory the technology level of the Federation should allow for a post scarcity economy to exist - people wouldn't covet or horde things because there would be no point as anyone could have as many of everything as they wanted. In evidence we have to assume it is some kind of propaganda because what we see in now way reflects what a post scarcity economy should look like.

You assume too much. I have owned two cats in my lifetime. Joking aside, the cat was his property.
