There IS no defense for calling somone a fag. Unless it's some kind of in-joke that everyone, especially the mods, understands, there is no possible way to excuse that.

This seems to me like it was intended to be humourous, so I think we may be jumping the gun a bit on accusing Laird of being a homophobe. Nevertheless, it does bear repeating that we normally treat derogatory terms for homosexuals much the same as we treat derogatory terms for ethnicities.
