Firewall for Vista

Post by Lazarus »

Just got a shiny new computer which came with Vista Home Premium. Naturally, it has the OS security systems, but should I not also be using a firewall/antivirus etc? Are there even any available yet? I'm advised specifically in the computer user manual NOT to use ZoneAlarm, since it slows the computer down apparently.

Mine came pre-installed with McAfee Security Center. It seems to run okay.

The default firewall that comes w/ Vista should be fine.

No real need to get another firewall - the Vista integrated one has all the features that a home user really needs, is transparent and has the fewest compatibility problems (since its pretty much the same as the XPSP2 one, and since its the default, software companies watch out for incompatibilities with it).

Stay away from Norton and McAfee if you want your PC to remain fast (their detection rates are not really anything to brag about either, to be honest), I use Kapersky personally but NOD32 is very good also.
