Your favourite musical instrument
Just asking around...what is your favourite muscial instrument? Guitar? Violin? Piano?
For me, I would say piano, cause nothing can make you feel more sad than a piano to me at the least.
When you really want to make a person cry, piano is one of the best instruments to do so.

Electric guitar gets the top spot for me, though a number of other instruments jockey for a close second.
Why? Of all instruments, I find the right effects and distortion can create a sound I find pleasing above all others. The way it is played tends toward musical phrasing I enjoy, and finally it's just plain awesome. You can't, like... air flute or anything.

Guitar, guitar, guitar.
Currently have:
*no-name strat
*Musicman EVH
On my wishlist:
*a REAL Fender Stratocaster
*Gibson SG
*Peavey Wolfgang
I'm also very partial to the piano, but cannot play it as well as I can the six string. I like bass, but so few acts place its sound ahead of or at least equal to the guitar. I like the mournful sound of a cello.
I'm a closet banjo fan and intend to buy one in the near future

The trumpet.
Because I played it for a time, because it is the sound of a fanfare and because it can carry the musical burden in jazz, concert bands, orchestras and many more musical styles. It can drown out every damn wood wind, pierces past any strings and it's sound can be modified in a number of pleasant ways. Trumpets rock.
edit: I would be remiss to note that it's essentially a trumpet that the Soldiers moved to in bygone-era's of warfighting. Trumpets just have a classical, nostalgic aura to them. And they're shiny.
(edit) honorable mention: all male choirs, groups of which for example, are the only proper way to listen to the Soviet National Anthem, especially this day, the day Sputnik flew 50 years ago. (listening to it right now)
They can also be downright creepy such as the Emporer's Theme in Star Wars Episode's V and VI.

Saxophone. It has almost the volume of a brass instrument, can play the fast runs of a woodwind, and has a lot of flexibility like a voice. It fits into almost any genre, and it's just damned fun to play.
Men's choirs are also kickass, and I love the sound of an F horn. Flutes in a low register and clarinets also get honorable mentions.

Bagpipes.
A well-played set of pipes sends shivers of awe down my spine.

Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.

I love the violin. Oh sure, by itself it's not quite as awesome as a piano or a guitar, but get a group of them... A group of violins with a full orchestra backing them up is the most powerful musical force on the planet, far as I'm concerned.
Anyone who does says no to a free high quality recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue is dead to me.General Zod wrote:Pipe organs are always awesome.

Piano - Most good music is somehow connected to the piano. I also play it.
Trumpet - I play it, as well as the reasons stated above. "The trumpet is the noblest instrument." -Wynton Marsalis.
Pipe Organ - Played well, it can evoke all sorts of menacing and amazing moods in me.
Bagpipes - A full set of pipes playing full bore will be the only thing you'll hear for days. Also goes well with my Scottish ancestry.

A guitar tuned to A.
And while it's not an instrument in the classical sense, in the modern midi sense, the string section and the choir sections are also damn awesome.
A massive church organ is fantastic too.

As a horn player i'm inclined to say trumpet, but nothing really tops a guitar in the hands of a masterful musician.

In my opinion an Electric Guitar, maybe it's a bias on my part but how many people debate about the greatest tuba or saxaphone players compared to the endless debate about guitar players be it Hendrix, Slash, The Edge, Carlos Santana or whoever nearly everyone has a favourite guitarist, the versatility of it's design make it best equiped to convay an enormous sense of emotion.
Secondly for me the bagpipes. Amazing Grace played properly on the pipes literally can make me weak at the knees.

Bagpipes by far. My mother was at a funeral for a former firefighter a few years ago. They had a single piper playing outside in the rain. It was the saddest thing.
Also, you get the bagpipes playing in a wide-open area with rolling hills and fog hanging over it all, and it will be downright haunting for miles.
