Tampa II, coming to an Australian political campaign near u

Post by mr friendly guy »

Remember the Tampa incident. Howard was losing according to the opinion polls and then he found a wedge issue. Basically asylum seekers had their crappy boat sink off Australia and were rescued by a Norwegian ship called the Tampa. Howard refused to allow the ship into Australia with the bullshit rhetoric of we decide who comes in (as if we could NOT send them back after if we found out they weren't genuine refugees).

At the end of the day Howard got to look "tough" on the issue because instead of processing their claims on Australian soil, we paid the pacific nation of Naaru to house them while we processed their claims of refugee status, of which IIRC lots of them, surprised, turn out to be genuine refugees.

Now Tampa II is coming to a political campaign near you
African refugees are fighting: Andrews
4th October 2007, 16:17 WST

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews says African refugees are fighting each other in nightclubs, forming gangs and congregating in parks to drink alcohol.

The federal government denied it was racist, but Mr Andrews ensured the race politics continued for another day by releasing material about African refugees provided to him by his department.

He did not provide any statistics to back up the claims.

Mr Andrews said there appeared to be problems specifically with African migrants, who were having difficulty in settling in Australia.

These concerns included the presence of "race-based gangs", reports of "altercations between African groups in nightclubs", tensions between African families leading to violence, and concern about crime among African youth.

There were also "reports of a developing trend of young African males congregating in parks at night, often to drink alcohol", he said.

Mr Andrews defended his decision to cut African refugee numbers to just over 4,000 this year and take in about 9,000 from Asia and the Middle East.

"Having a more equal focus across Africa, the Middle East and Asia hardly constitutes racism," he said, promising to review the makeup next year.

The minister has been under fire for suggesting the federal government was accepting fewer African refugees this year because they were finding it difficult to integrate.

In August, Mr Andrews said the real reason for the cut was that the government needed to accept more refugees from other parts of the world, including those displaced by the Iraq war.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon has said Africans are not over-represented in crime statistics.

Many Sudanese refugees who arrive in Australia have lived through years of violence and require trauma counselling.

Most have low levels of education and require government support to learn English, find jobs and adapt to the Australian way of life.

Prime Minister John Howard denied his government was engaging in race politics and whipping up fear.

"Absolutely not, that's a contemptible suggestion," Mr Howard said as he campaigned in north Queensland.

The Edmund Rice Centre, which works with refugees from Sudan, said the government was fanning the flames of racism in a desperate bid to be re-elected.

The centre's director, Phil Glendenning, said Mr Andrews had stooped to gutter politics by smearing an entire race of people.

"The bottom line is that the government sees itself in political difficulty approaching the election and is deliberately targeting one of the world's most vulnerable communities for some sort of political gain," Mr Glendenning said.

"This is not leadership.

"This is lowest common denominator politics at its worst and indicates what some politicians think of the people who elect them."

Human Rights Commissioner Graeme Innes said the government's move to single out African refugees was "un-Australian".

World Vision Australia head Tim Costello warned other countries may stop taking Sudanese refugees displaced by the Darfur crisis if Australia clamped down on African migration.

Tim Costello called on Mr Howard to explain that the government's reduction in its intake of African refugees was not linked to Sudanese violence, but was simply because refugees from Iraq and Burma were a higher priority.

"I am very disappointed if there is a link between Sudanese violence and a quick end to this program," Mr Costello said.

"If countries like us in the humanitarian program take that approach, no one will take Africans.

"The prime minister has to say very clearly that this has nothing to do with them being violent, but that it was the recommendation of the human rights commissioner."
AAP
Lets put this statement in the context of what Andrews was asked. He wasn't just asked about African integration, he was also asked about an 18 year old Sudanese man who was bashed to death by 3 white guys.

So which is it Mr Andrews? Is the intake of African refugees because there are higher priorities elsewhere or because they really are more prone to crime and anti social behaviour, in which case back it up with statistics considering the Victorian police commissioner's contradicts your claim.

I have no problem with the former (which I suspect is the real reason), however the latter is blatant attempt to appeal to the "us and them" mentality displayed by many racists. This is most probably an attempt to capitalise on anything in a bid to get votes, kind of like the Tampa incident. This time there isn't a Norwegian boat coming to rescue the government, so they have to manufacture stuff up.

And the response shows that Queensland's new premier isn't afraid of calling a spade a spade

And remember folks, its only racist when rednecks do it. With politicians their motivations are less clear, so they get the benefit of the doubt. Except when its black politicians descriminating against white Zimbabweans, then its obviously racist. Because the only way to tell someone is racist is by their motivation (which requires you to have mind reading powers), rather than by the action itself.

Remember too that if a group isn't 'integrating', that's clearly their fault and nothing should be done to improve 'integration'. I mean, drop them in a different culture after giving them that ASININE trivia quiz bullshit, obviously it'll work, right?

I've been hearing a lot of bullshit from various politicians regarding Sudanese refugees, yet strangely enough, the people who've actually had dealings with them all seem to say that they're generally pretty nice people. There are some who live not far from my place, and the girls there always want to pat my dog.

Last year, Tamworth (where they have the country music festival) refused to let five Sudanese families settle there, with some of the bullshit reasoning including this beauty:
Sydney Morning Herald wrote:At a meeting where the poll was conducted, several residents had said they did "not want the refugees coming and drinking our water supply, or taking our jobs, that sort of thing", Cr Woodley said. "I think you would have to say there was a racist element at play there."
Strangely enough, the town has plenty of water for the thousands of people who come each year to listen to the country music, but five more families would stretch their resources too much, apparently.

To be honest, this could be the Tampa Backfire rather than the Tampa Mk II:

- Rudd has shown he's clever enough to not play ball with these issues. It's not exactly the first time the government has tried this tactic (Haneef), and Rudd has absolutely refused to take the bait whilst focusing on issues he can make political ground in.

- Tampa happened less than two weeks before 9/11. What happened then seemed to totally justify his actions later: what if some of them had been terrorists?

- There's not the singular visual appeal of Tampa, the SASR, etc.

I'm sure that Rudd will play it as he has been: minimal discussion, not much serious opposition, oh look global warming!

I love the smell of September in the morning. Once we got off at Richmond, walked up to the 'G, and there was no game on. Not one footballer in sight. But that cut grass smell, spring rain...it smelt like victory.

Dynamic. When [Kuznetsov] decided he was going to make a difference, he did it...Like Ovechkin...then you find out - he's with Washington too? You're kidding.

Two gems from an Age article:
THE row over the drastic cut in African refugees escalated yesterday, with Queensland Premier Anna Bligh branding Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews racist, while Pauline Hanson applauded the Government for protecting the "Australian way of life".
I'm sure Pauline's support will make Kevin Andrews feel a whole lot safer politically. Oh, wait.

But this, this is the best part:
He also conceded that a dossier he released this week, which claimed African refugees were forming gangs, fighting in nightclubs and attacking other families, was based on "anecdotal" feedback from the community.

Mr Andrews was criticised for not substantiating the claims and only releasing a summary of the evidence, in the same way he released part of the advice for cancelling the visa of Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef.

"By its nature, what the community is saying to the department, that part is anecdotal," Mr Andrews said. "We know as a matter of empirical data this is a group of people who have lower levels of education, more have come from refugee camps. In the end you make decisions based on a whole range of evidence, some data, some anecdotal, that's always been the way of Government."

Mr Andrews disputed Victorian police commissioner Christine Nixon's assertion that the Sudanese were not over-represented in crime statistics. "You can use data in all sorts of ways," he said.
Asshole. I thought governments were supposed to use...you know, hard facts rather than word off the streets?

It gets better
"When we look at the data, what we're actually seeing is that they're not, in a sense, represented more than the proportion of them in the population," Ms Nixon said on Wednesday.

Mr Andrews begged to differ.

"When you look at the data that I've looked at, it does seem to me that there is a higher proportion," he told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

But he was unable to release any figures showing higher rates of crime among Sudanese people.

Mr Andrews also offered no data to back his claim that African refugees were forming gangs, fighting each other in nightclubs, attacking other families and congregating in parks to drink alcohol.

"Well, those figures are figures which are produced by the police," he said.

Instead, the minister referred to immigration department figures that showed Sudanese refugees have lower levels of education and a younger age profile than others before them.
I love how he dismisses figures because they produced by someone else, yet doesn't realise by that same token others can easily dismiss the government's figures, on the basis that its produced by someone else. Plus his figures on age and level of education is less relevant than the actual statistics on crime itself.

Facts, what is this "facts" that you speak of. This government gave us the Children Overboard scandal and the WMD in Iraq BS, and selective quoting from Dr Haneef's transcript which turned a PhD project into a "terrorist" one.

Politicians are less accountable these days, but the Government's level of bullshit takes it to a new level. Moreover the racist fuckwits are starting to come out the closet. But thats ok, as long the economy is good.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story ... and I thought that only applied to journo's.

As Jester said I think this will fizzle ... Rudd's pretty much kept his mouth shut (probably waiting to see how far Andrews digs his hole) and playing things safe.

Is it just me or has Howard kept quiet on the whole thing.. except for trying to cover Andrew's arse over being called racist Howard seems to have left Andrew to hang himself over this.

I used to live an hour north of Tamworth, and what a difference having a university makes to a town's disposition.
