Calixis Sector Data (40K)

Post by Imperial Overlord »

The Calixus Sector of the Segmentun Obscuris is going to be the base setting for the upcoming 40K RPG. Black Industries has put up a map and an index of some of the worlds of the Calixus Sector on its website. Some interesting fluff is included.

Calixus

Some interesting points:

THE MISERICORD:

The ship follows a set route between three planets, as part of its trade charter. It is viewed by the locals as a sign of ill omen, but the most interesting part is this:
Inside, the Misericord resembles a huge, complex and grotesquely ornate castle. Many different ships make up the Misericord and they each have their own style, which in turn has been embellished and replaced over the centuries. In places where the component ships connect, corridors can become precipitous shafts, rooms can be upside-down and moving from place to place can be very complex, although the void born crew are adept at clambering up makeshift ladders or even leaping pits in the floor. The Misericord’s interior is archaic, with feasting halls, dungeons, cobwebbed processional galleries and many other places that seem to have little connection to the business of the ship or the needs of the crew.
The Misericord is a great fusion of lesser vessels, essentially a well maintained and deliberately created space hulk.

SCINTILLA-capital, hive world, population of a mere 25 billion. This is lower than the normal range of hive worlds and it isn't the only world that falls outside the usual population ranges.

IOCANTHUS-war torn agri-world with a population of staggering (by agri world standards) 5 billion.

SPECTORIS-aquatic agriworld with a more normal population of 2 million. It is exempt from making contributions to the Imperial Guard because its food production work is more important to the sector.

As far as I'm aware, space hulks cannot be deliberately created. Once its been cleared of any infestations however it could be used and possibly upgraded by installing new weapons and plugging them into one of the existing generators.

A space hulk is just a conglomeration of vessels that have lost in the warp. Some are inhabited, some are not.

At least one space hulk was refitted and turned into an Imperial battleship.

From my brief browse at Games Day, I got the impression that part of the reason for the vessels existence is to provide a setting for "Void Born" character origins in the campaign.

I'm not surprised, although it screamed "set adventures inside me" when I read the description.

Is it me, or does the entire sector seem like a shitty place to live?

That's a statement that could easily be applied to the whole 40K setting.

Yeah, but some places are shittier than others. The Scarus sector seems pretty nice as a whole.

Perhaps, but this looks almost deliberate. I mean, an agriworld that's entirely grey that's populated by depressed people? A city where the currency is bullets? What the hell?

An oddly serene, pastoral world of shepherd flocks and herding where, curiously, no one lives beyond the age of forty years standard. Often thought to be a rumour or a joke, the “death threshold” of Orbel Quill is quite real. Visitors and travellers must beware, as often they are far above the age of forty in sidereal term. Anyone forty or over is stricken with a terminal decline and dies within thirty six hours, even visitors who have amassed their years ship-time.
WTF? It's so ridiculous, it could be straight out of a bad Star Trek episode.

Have a very nice day.

Except in Star Trek it'd be down to technobabble. Here we can at least blame it on the twisted experiment of a Chaos god or two :P .

If I ever run a game in that sector, that place is being evacuated, its population quarantined, and hit with virus bombs. 'Even if they've amassed their years ship-time' screams chaos to me.

So basically the place is off limits to space marines.

Of course, without the full 'GM's backstory' it might just be that some death cultists are bumping everyone off. In which case Space Marines will likely give them a bad day.
