Issues! (What did I do wrong?)

Post by Phantasee »

So I got a stick of RAM, plugged it in. Computer wouldn't boot up, just powered on and off repeatedly. So I yank the plug, and reseat the stick. Computer starts up! Joy.

Except Windows isn't recognizing the second stick. Hm.

Also, I got a new mouse (finally) to replace the broke one I tortured myself with previously. Only difference is that the new one uses PS/2 instead of USB. I can't get it to track anything, but the light turns on (it's optical). The USB mouse I had previously works fine with both connected, that's what I have to use right now. How do I get this second mouse to work?

there are certain mice that don't recognize the PS2/USB adapters. Are you connecting it with one of them? was the adapter included with your new mouse or you're using one that you already had from another mouse? did you check the mouse box to see if it works both as USB and PS2?

With your RAM... there are differen kinds of RAM, it sounds likely that you have one that is not compatibe with your computer. Did you check the specifications for you computer's RAM memmory before buying it?

It's the same RAM as I had previously installed, PC 2100 DDR 512 MB. I made sure I got the same stuff.

The new mouse is PS2, and I plugged it into the correct port for it. It's just not working. The old mouse was USB, and that's working just fine in the USB port, all of them.

This isn't going as smoothly as I imagined. :?

Okay, four reboots later, I got the mouse working (scroll wheel isn't scrolling, but I'm sure that's a minor fix).

Still nothing on the RAM. I'm going to try swapping it around, see what that does.

How many ram sticks do you have plugged in.

2.

The computer got a free upgrade to 512 when I bought it, but I made them swap out the 256 for a 512 instead of letting them plug in another 256. Just so I could upgrade easier later on (haha).

Both are 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM. New stick is Kinsgton Value Ram, only kind I could find.

Do this. Test each stick individually. See if both work when installed alone. We will move on from there.

Do that test using the same slot for both in turn.

Everything works! Computer tells me I have 0.99GB of RAM, which is good.

Thanks for the help guys. Swapping them around until they worked was the trick for me.
