Of course there is! There's even a recognised claimant. As far as I can tell it's fairly straight forward, now if you wanted to restore the RUSSIAN Royal family!

I'm no expert on Russian history, but wouldn't restoring the Russian royal family involve some sort of necromancy?
73% of all statistics are made up, including this one.

I'm pretty sure all the royal families from just about every European nation are related so I'm sure they could find a branch some where.

Interesting. A turn from a republic into a constitutional monarchy isn't that common (and will drive several Democracy Über Alles -people in USA crazy). Could it work for Georgia's benefit, or would it just be a change in title and head of state (who now wears a funny hat)?

On the contrary, Russia routinely lives through times of great changes.

The recent demographic crisis that struck us is not a permanent condition for Russia, or at least I hope so, since darker U.N. prognostics show an over 50% population contraction.

Well, they could do what the Norwegians did when they decided they wanted a monarchy and import a Danish prince.

Starting a new monarchy is easy; Europe is stuffed to the nostrils with unemployed princes, archdukes and assorted high nobility who are low enough on various lists of succession to accept the job, even if it is in a craphole like Russia or Georgia. I'm sure a few of them even have ties to the previous monarchies to justify the move.

I was thinking more of the famines and mass-slaughters that have been known to accompany great changes, in Russia.
Maybe the prizes-for-conceiving program that Putin's government has instituted, will succeed in reversing the present demographic trend.

How would the Russians decide between either claimant though? That sort of confusion used to lead to very bloody civil wars, whether Imperial China, post Stuart Britain (the Irish part and Jacobite risings count, I think), Spain, the Caliphate or where else.
Hopefully no one will be worked up enough to start dying for either Romanov in modern times.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.
These days it's either going to be one intimidating/buying off the other, or just outright assassinating them.
The only way I can see of it being blood free is to elect the first one, and then maybe let it become hereditary after that.
Of course, this opens the door for Naboo style elected monarchs, which leads us to Amidala, which leads to Jar Jar Binks. So maybe this isn't the best way forward...
A restoration of the Bagrations (Prince Bagration being a Georgian royal heir who served in the Russian Army in 1812, as you may recall from the Battle of Borodino) would be fascinating, and really only the restoration of the Spanish throne after many years of dictatorship and the restoration of the Cambodian throne after the Khmer Rogue are the only modern precedents, and both provided order after long periods of suffering and chaos, which Georgia has certainly gone through in the past two centuries.
As for the Romanovs themselves, the claim of Maria Vladimirovna is almost universally recognized as the most legitimate, and her marriage to Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia means that her son George Mikhailovich is of suitably Royal blood to inherit, and would make the present Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov Dynasty become the Hohenzollern-Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov Dynasty and provide them the highest precedents in blood and legitimacy. I could certainly see something like that happening in Russia as a desire for conservative Orthodox stability to restore a failing society is almost naturally asserted, and the Cossack populations, aggressively growing in size, make up a larger and larger percentage of the overall Russian populace (Cossack families tending to have six children whereas normal Russian families average one, sort of like Orthodox v. Secular Jews in Israel).
Interesting enough in regard to Spin Echo's comment, the Royal House to which the Romanov Dynasty is most closely related happens to be the Danish Royal House, as there was extensive and repeated intermarrying between the two families in the 19th century.

I wouldn't call Franco's reign a "period of suffering and chaos". Certainly the events leading up to it qualify, but by the time he croaked they were half a century old. Also, I beleive it was generally understood that the Monarchy would be restored when he stopped being in power. I'm told it's commonly said of Juan Carlos that Franco groomed him well.
Didn't all the Royal families in Europe intermarry a fair bit? What with even the blood disorder affecting the Romanovs was because of intermarrying with the British Royal Family?

Hopefully I'll either die by the time I see a real Czar put up, or be settled somewhere in the FSU republics. I don't like monarchy. Be it harmful or just useless, it's never needed. It's an anachronism, and I'd prefer all monarchies to die off naturally as soon as possible.

Marina, on the other hand, wrote a sci-fi universe where all the monarchies on Earth were restored. Granted, this happened at gunpoint, with more advanced aliens at the other end of the barrel, but it's portrayed as a good thing. The previous government where fascist genocidal dicks.

Historical Czars and Kings were more close to that than Marina's utopia, sorry.
