I've been waiting for this for a long, long time.
There's a short video available at the site, too.

Already reported in the seventeen mage long Brawl thread a little bit down the page, I'm afraid.

I remember being a Sega fan in the 90s. Now I can determine, once and for all, who's tougher: Sonic or Mario.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

That's a tough one. I've always gone with Sonic, but thinking about it...

We're talking about a guy who can run twice the speed of sound (according to the manuals and comics) and tear steel robots apart with his back spines, jump several times his own height while curled in a ball that destroys nearly everything in his path, and seems to take no injury running into a brick wall at full speed. When he has even one ring, he can even survive dips in lava.

Versus

A guy who can shatter bricks with his bare hands, jump several times his own height, can kill the sun by hurling a turtle shell at it, destroy castles with his feet and kick them beyond the horizon, throw large dinosaurs hundreds of feet in the air, hurl fireballs from his hands, perform jumps with multiple flips while carrying two barrels of water, and is a doctor, math professor, skilled typist, plumber, astronaut, animal trainer and zoologist.

Sonic is fast, and was voiced by Jaleel White

Mario killed THE FUCKING SUN, and was portrayed by Captain Lou.

Winner: Mario

Yes, but he was voiced by Jaleel White when Jaleel White owned the airwaves. ^_^

This is cool. What's not cool is people worrying about balance in a game which already has ridiculous characters from widely varying games and power levels. Sonic will just be crippled to fit, like Samus. Oh wait, a fat Italian can defeat Samus, zomg so unrealistic!!!!1111

Are you kidding? I find it ridiculous that a guy who can throw a turtle shell with enough force to destroy stars can possibly lose to a girl in armor.

Now Samus vs Ice Climbers...heh.

Mario has a totally consistent power level and is not ever thrown into wildly differing levels of challenge, no sir. :) Don't make him get out his paint gun and SUCK.

So Sonic is fast, so fucking what. He isn't even that fast in the early games. Having Sonic is awesome, and twittering about 'zomg teh overpowahed' is crazy. Melee had plenty of different power levels in characters and it was all cool.

C'mon, didn't you get sick of seeing so many Fox, Marth, Sheik matchups? Since we can't force the Wii to scan for the presence of balls before it lets you online, I hope it's more balanced--I'd love to see a nice spread of characters, instead of consistantly being ground into mush by Fox or Sheik or such. You could beat 'em by being better, but they were simply not that fun to play against--and a higher amount of balance benefits everyone. I intend to play online, and start convincing people to leave some of the items on. Items piss me off, but I've always been more of a chivalric fighter myself.

No, With his HEAD 8) .

And it was forgotten that Sonic can survive being on the outside of a spaceship in outer-space, as well as it's taking off from the ground to orbit in seconds (a truly monstrous speed) and he held on with his hands or by sheer awesome-feet friction. 8)

It's a common misconception. Fox, Marth, and Sheik are the EASIEST to get extremely good at, but the reality is that almost every character can defeat any other character.

Marth was my best character for some time, as you say, and then I started messing around with Peach and discovered some tricks with her. Now Peach is by far my favorite character, and I crush *anyone* who comes at me with Marth.

Also, a friend of mine originally started with Marth and switched over to Samus as his favorite character, as she's extremely strong but still fast with a number of moves.

Heck, if you beat Sonic & Knuckles as Sonic, and do it WITHOUT all the Chaos emeralds, you get treated to Sonic with no rings surviving atmospheric re-entry and being caught by Tails' plane right before impact with the surface.

Yeah, Sonic's so hardcore that he doesn't think twice about atmospheric reentry even when he's naked at minimal strength (no rings).

Come on. If it's online, then there WILL be disparities, certain characters WILL be overused, and idiots who read gamefaqs WILL rule casual gamers. It's called 'the internet' and 'public multiplayer'. I never had a problem with character abuse in Melee, because I don't know dickless losers who would demand to use a certain character or piss and moan without his security blanket. Rare, I know, among players of fighting games. :)

People I know started getting pissy at the idea of banning certain characters. So while I was doing quite well with Jigglypuff, really I wanted to be using Bowser, who really has no chance against a person like Marth or Shiek or Fox. Bowser is, without a doubt, utterly incompetant. Yes, someone who plays religiously with him might be able to bust out some pain, but it's so much harder that there's no point to it. Whatever joy you have from those two or three good hits is overwhelmed by the frustration.

Besides, it's not like it's really all that much harder to balance characters a bit better than they did last time. Street Fighter has 'best characters' in the sense that there are ones that are vastly superior at top levels of play, but the differences are far less extreme. Smash Brother's issue is that there are some characters that are weak AND hard to play, which kinda tanks them. Plus, the differences in power were so obvious that one had to wonder if they even were concerned with balance whatsoever. I don't think they were--I think they were just making a party game, not a competitive skill-game. But with this next one, I hope they do.

I have faith in Nintendo's team, so I don't see any reason why they can't make a more balanced selection of characters outside of laziness. Since it costs them basically nothing except some playtime and brainpower to do, why not go the extra step to fix the balance a tad? Casual gamers will always get crushed and certain characters will always be overused, sure. But I just want a bit more work put into the game! That's certainly not much to ask for, certainly no more than we ask of other games.

I got the impression that there was just a few characters that really, genuinely, suck, in Smash Bros, and everyone else was pretty well balanced.

The "big guys" (DK and Bowser) are in the suck category. Ice Climbers takes the cake. Yoshi also sucks. Pichu too. Maybe Luigi?

Everyone else is actually pretty even.

That's my experience. But when you consider how many characters there actually are in the game, you've basically written off a fair amount of the people in it. I play as Jigglypuff in melee only because Kirby got turned into a pink pile of ass when they toned him down. All characters can compete, but several need to do it in such an oblique way. Someone like bowser being large, weak, and slow simply can't compete. I turn items off most of the time simply because it adds some fairness back in. A big, slow fatass can't item-hog nearly as well as fox, and that's just one more strike against 'em.

Yoshi and Luigi can be nasty in good hands. They just take a bit of work to get good with.

It's possible to use Luigi's rocket-headbutt to deliver some serious pain, though, and in a 4-player match it's pretty easy to set up. Not to mention the one-hit-kill UpB special.

And show me a dedicated Peach player and I'll show you me shaking in my boots. That girl is murder on wheels with a good player.

If mario is indeed capable of destroying the sun with a mere turtle shell (death-star like powers) let us not forget that he also shrinks to half his size and dies if bit in the foot by a turtle...or if he attempts to run into it from behind. Let us not forget that he has been killed by football players; and by footballs thrown at relatively ordinary speeds by the same. Let us bear in mind that (relatively) slow-moving non-incendiary cannonballs are known to kill him, to say nothing of fast-moving hedgehog spines that are known to rip through metal (metal-sonic).

Winner: Mario - - he's just that good lookin'.
