They'll probably get buffed a bit. At worst, they shouldn't be any more underpowered than they were in Melee.
plus the Pokémon trainer that might work like Zelda in the last game, if she could shapeshift into three different characters, but not too often apparently.
The "endurance" factor is most likely there as a balancing factor. One of the Pokemon will probably be stronger in general (even though each will have their strengths), but the player has to know when to pull it out.
Then there's Samus that can't use her most powerful attack without turning into Zero-Suit Samus.
Yeah, I'm interested in seeing how that will pan out. Giving the no-nonsense bounty hunter a wildcard like that seems a bit strange, but Zero Suit Samus does look like she will be fun to use, even if the can't dish out the damage that she could with the Power Suit.

And, of course, it looks like her Final Smash can potentially miss completely, since appears to be simply horizontal. Probably a free KO on whoever gets tagged by it, though.
As I said, it's going to be interesting to see how they balance such things...
Yeah, but I don't see any reason to believe they've given up on balancing, as you alluded to earlier.
Ah, I see. Well I don't think there will be something that will break the game, they'll most likely make sure of that, but I think there's a good chance some characters will be less useful. That's not a huge bad thing, but a bit boring, I think.
They'll probably each have their specific uses. Link's appears to only target one person, but it's probably a guaranteed KO (unless it was executed somewhere like the lower area of the Hyrule temple in Melee, perhaps). Mario's appears to blast everyone, but maybe someone at a low percentage could survive. Bowser, Yoshi, and Fox require the player to still hunt down opponents.

So Link's is probably more of an assured KO, but others could get more KOs. But a hammer or Kirby star could potentially get you three KOs, too.
Yes I know that, but I think all characters had some way of countering it, and when they did get it, they had an equally good chance of KOing someone. Imagine instead if some characters had turned into a Hammer Bro and threw hammers, and others made the hammer chuck out hearts and tomatoes...
But if they could only get the item once per match?
Later...

Intresting.

The Penny Arcade Forums have a listing of what's supposed to be twenty different series icons' that will be in the game, listed in Japanese Alphabetical order from Super Smash Bros itself to Sonic. According to this listing, #13 (Between Fire Emblem and Ice Climbers) and #19 (Between Kid Icarus and Sonic the Hedgehog) are still blank.

Someone mentioned that, again, going by the Japanese alphabet, "Rockman" just happens to fall in the space between "Parutena no Kagami"(Kid Icarus) and "Sonikku za Hejjihoggu"(However, so does "Pikmin". Keep your fingers crossed).

Okay, investigating a little further, I found out how they figured it out. Each icon's image file is named not by series, but by number. So Sonic's icon is the twentieth. The listing is as follows:

1. Smash Brothers
2. Donkey Kong
3. StarFox
4. Kirby
5. F-Zero
6. Metroid
7. Earthbound/Mother
8. Pokemon
9. Zelda
10. Mario
11. Yoshi
12. Fire Emblem
13. ???
14. Ice Climbers
15. Animal Crossing
16. Wario
17. Metal Gear
18. Kid Icarus
19. ???
20. Sonic the Hedgehog

So note that this doesn't mean there will be twenty series' in total(although that's possible/likely), but twenty is, going by the numbers of the icons, the most we know.

So, if that's it, I'm hoping for 19 to be Rockman(Mega Man) myself.

Someone also pointed out that characters and stages are usually closely linked. At the very least, there hasn't been any stages that didn't match at least one character in the game over the course of the series. So an Animal Crossing playable character is a definite possibility.

Oh, and here's a movie they showed at the conference where they talked about the delay:

I was being semi-facetious, but there's a decent chance.

There are other possibilities for the delay, like Sakurai cramming extra modes in or Iwata wanting successive GOTYs instead of pitting Brawl against Galaxy, but Megaman makes a lot of sense with the MH3 announcement from 10/10.

A couple of updates for today, the first addressing the February rescheduling, and the second about a snapshot function:
Oct. 12 Fri. 2007

New Launch and E for All

Today I have some good news and some bad news. Let's get the bad part out of the way first, shall we?

As many of you may have already heard, we have had to delay the launch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl by just a little bit—it will now be launching on February 10th in the Americas. I know that many of you will be disappointed by this news, but please understand that the extra development time will enable us to make the game the best it can be. It is my earnest hope that you will all be enjoying this game for many years, and we are all working very hard toward that goal.

Phew. Now for some good news to tide you over.

The forthcoming E for All event will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning October 18.

And it appears that this event will display the first ever public playable version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl! I am planning on having people play the game—but with limited character selection.

The problem is Sonic. What to do... I suppose if we’re going to all this trouble, perhaps we should make him playable.

Oh, yes. And for those of you who come to play, please remember—you tap the Control Stick to do Smash attacks.

Have fun!
Oct. 12 Fri. 2007

Taking Snapshots

While playing the game, you might encounter an interesting situation. At times like this, you must PAUSE!

screenshot

Stop the action and look at the scene from all different directions.

If that pause in the action makes for an interesting shot that you wish you could keep, then by all means, do so. Take a SNAAAAAAAPSHOT!

screenshot

If you’re on the pause screen, you can snap a photo anytime!

screenshot

Like this.

screenshot

Take funny snapshots...

screenshot

As often as you like!

You can take snapshots like the images we’ve shown here on Smash Bros. Dojo.

We had a snapshot mode in the past, but you couldn’t take a snapshot anytime in the middle of a match. And they were saved to a GameCube Memory Card—it wasn’t like you could save several dozens of photos.

However! This time there are SD cards! With those, you’ll have room to save plenty of snapshots!

screenshot

Just give it a name and save it to either location.

But wait! There’s more!

screenshot

"Send"???

This feature allows you to send your snapshots to people you’ve registered as Friends for Nintendo WFC play. So you can give them funny little screenshots as presents. You can view them in the Album.

Don’t you think you’d be happy to suddenly get a funny photo from a friend? Perhaps online brawling isn’t the only way to compete.

Uh, as for that thing that’s blurred out, that’s still a secret. We’re still in development, so I apologize in advance if it gets dropped, but we are thinking of one more trick for this mode.

Yeah, perhaps. It was all those Final Smashes that seemed to me like they were going for a "let's overpower them all" approach, but if it's just one per game it's not really like that.
But if they could only get the item once per match?
Then the characters that chuck items wouldn't be as fun to play in the long run...

From the recent gameplay footage shown on some websites, it appears that smash balls appear more than once per match and that anyone can get it each time. However, the balls float around and must be broken using several attacks before grabbing it. The player that gets it must then press the special attack button (usually 'B') in order to unleash it. If the player is knocked around too much before using it, the smash ball becomes free again and someone else can grab it.

So a fast character will be able to get to the smash ball more quickly, but must make more attacks in order to break the ball open than a slower, stronger character can.

Hey, Advance Wars assist trophy!

Were those infantry shooting? The tank did, but I wasn't sure on the infantry.

I think they were, yeah. It was cool when the infantry and tanks started popping out from nowhere.

So the GameFAQs forum is already talking about banning Metaknight from competitive play  .

Triple jump, glide and a lifting attack. Sounds horrific to drop. (If you care about such things)

And no more so than a million of the people's up-hits. Hitting someone up off the screen is just as likely to autokill them as hitting them down. Plus, everyone has a stomp in this game.

It's way too late to do anything about it, but you know what I would really like to see?

Costume changes. Possibly with modifications to the character's movesets or stats.

Like Mario, for instance, might have a Dr. Mario, Tanooki suit, or Sunshine outfit, Peach could have her Strikers Charged outfit, and/or Daisy as an alternate, who would be a little slower, but stronger. Samus could have her Fusion suit, or Dark Samus, or her original(i.e. Non-Varia) suit with Zero-Suit Samus looking like she does with the JustinBailey code. Or if they have(had) Marth back in the game, Roy would be an alternate, or Falco as an alternate for Fox(hell, you could have almost the entire team as alternates for him), or Tails and/or Knuckles as alternates for Sonic, and the Pokemon Trainer could be remade as different heroes from the other games (He looks like Red from FireRed/Leaf Green now, so an alternate would be like Dawn from Diamond/Pearl).

I always wanted Wolf O'Donnell to be Fox's alternate outfit, with the announcer even announcing him as Wolf. Same with Princess Peach and Daisy. It'd be a nice thing to include.

Tails and Knuckles might be a wee bit too different than Sonic though. The Pokemon Trainer changing for different costumes would be great too.

Before they had wario, I felt the same way with him. Red, Green, Bluerple and Yellow? Mario, Luigi, Waluigi and Wario!

I thought that'd make things nicer. Less character pictures. You could just have larger picture boxes that say, like "Mario Brothers!" for the game. However, then you get people fighting not only over characters, but subdivisions of characters. Despite my early like of the idea, I'm still a fan of "New characters are new characters, not new outfits" style, for balance's sake.

Even Luigi could be a Mario costume. And I want a Fire Mario costume! White overalls and red shirt.

I want to see Dark Link and Zora Link as Link's costumes (we already know about Dark Link).

Wolf and Falco could be Fox costumes.

Sonic needs Shadow as an alternate costume.

Yeah, "subcharacters" would either complicate the UI (color selection for subplayer) or restrict the user's choices (two people can't play the same subcharacter or player cannot choose an alternate color scheme the player knows exists for the subcharacter), and neither option gives any real benefit for the player.

Eh, Peach already had most of that. She could jump, double jump, hover for a very long period of time while moving side to side, then pull out her umbrella (a third jump) and glide some more. You could literally knock me off the left side of the screen in Hyrule Temple (largest stage in the game) and if I wanted to I could jump back, hover across half the stage, and pop out the umbrella and fly off the right side of the screen. Her recovery is just ridiculous.

So you just beat the crap out of her. Metaknight has good recovery, but he's also clearly small, so he should be easy to throw out.
