RANT: Fucking Stupid Uni Student Service Systems...
These wonderful asshats only give you three tries to get your password
right and then lock you out from the system. Fucking total asshats.
And to make it worse, you have to use a six digit number for your
password, instead of easy to remember word passwords......

Re: RANT: Fucking Stupid Uni Student Service Systems...
You think that's bad??? My uni's system requires us to have alphabets (with capitalisations AND without), numerals, AND symbols. The system also performs an automatic dictionary check on the password...if it matches any known word, no go. It requires a almost random mix of the above before it accepts the password. And to top it off? You have to change the fucker every 3 months...MKSheppard wrote:These wonderful asshats only give you three tries to get your password

Yeah, it's the same over here on the three tries thing. Pisses me off sometimes.

Yeah! They should let you try as many times as you like. There's no security concerns there, nosiree...

3 tries and 6 letters is not an unreasonable password policy.
We also did not allow the password to match the previous 8 passwords.
However, here is a little trick.
Pick a password you can remember
aka. IlikeGuns
Then add number. Every time you are expected to change your password just increment your number.
IlikeGuns1, IlikeGuns2, etc.

Hope that isn't directed to me cause I said that it pisses me off sometimes but not that I don't think that it's not needed.

The system where I work makes us change passwords every three months and you can never use the exact same one again. That's just the mainframe.
There are so many screw job things we have to sign into now it's ridiculous. Most of them can be set for the same password but a couple of them are more picky than the others.
Sign into Novell, then Win2000, then Mainframe, then Pyxis Connect (different password) and if I want to read email I have to sign into the web based version of Outlook Express Some of the systems are case sensetive and some are not.
I also have different passwords for the Pyxis computer and the TPN computer respectively. The Narc vault also requires a seperate password. Luckilly it doesn't change but when you get one you pick the first 3 characters and then it randomly assignes the other one.

Pick numbers the correspond to letters on a phone. And spell something.
It was six numbers.......
try to remember six fucking numbers.....
ie ) napalm would be 627256
Remembering numbers is harder than letters, I agree, but not that hard if you use a trick or two. We all know we have way too many PIN numbers!!

Pshhh, that's nothing. Back when I went to school, we had the three strikes policy, and we had to have a password containing letters and numbers. And the computer people would try to crack your password too. If they could, you got locked out and had to change it.MKSheppard wrote:These wonderful asshats only give you three tries to get your password

Well, we have a fairly user-friendly system, where we can select our own password, and get 7 tries before lockout. However, my high school used our ID number, which were 10 digits long.

Especially if you use them regularly... I normally keep PINs stored in my phone when I get them, and a couple of days later I can wipe them.kheegan wrote:If you can remember phone numbers, 6 numbers should be a piece of cake...MKSheppard wrote:It was six numbers.......TrailerParkJawa wrote:3 tries and 6 letters is not an unreasonable password policy.

Email passwords have a dictionary search run on them to make sure you aren't being lazy (which is a security risk) and you are encouraged to use symbols and numbers.

For number passwords, a favorite trick of mine is to pick the date of some historical event (I'm sure Shep knows more than a few), e.g. Pearl Harbour will be 07121941 or something like that. For combinations with words, symbols, and digits, s0m3th!nG_lik3_th!$_1s_gR3@t.

Let me get this straight....you can't memorize six stupid numbers? Tell me you're joking.....
If you can memorize your home phone number, you can memorize a fucking 6-number password. If not, write it down and put it in your wallet!

Many of the passwords I have actually come from being forced to remember such 6 digit codes. It's not that hard.
