It helps if you switch the mirror to a nonofficial one, like mirrors.kernel.org if in the US. Gah, shoulda remembered to tell people this sooner.

Anything worth the cost of a missile, which can be located on the battlefield, will be shot at with missiles. If the US military is involved, then things, which are not worth the cost if a missile will also be shot at with missiles. -Sea Skimmer

lshw says IGP 340M. And it's non-upgradable. The problem happens on a fresh install and the live CD, but I got around it by using the generic vesa video driver. It's not like I run any heavy graphical stuff.Pu-239 wrote:Ugh, radeon?
What's your graphics adapter specifically?
Might help to boot in verbose mode normally, or recovery mode and manually bring the network interface up w/ ifconfig/dhclient and download/run the ATi driver package from ATi's site. In any case, a fresh install probably will help fix things, since Gutsy is supposed to be more robust if it can't bring up a GUI using a non-vesa driver. Newer much better ATi drivers are supposed to be out in a month's time. (doesn't help you if you're running anything older than a 9600).
The next problem is that my juryrigged wireless setup isn't working. I can connect to my router with the network applet, I get an IP, but everything's blocked - can't even get into the router's control panel. And neither ifconfig nor iwconfig show a wlan0...
Generic vesa is awful even if you don't run any grahpically intensive stuff- mind posting xorg.conf while attempting to use the 'ati' driver?
Here seems instructions for getting it working http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=11365
Also, sometimes the wireless can show up as eth1, eth0, ath0, etc depending on chipset. Native support for broadcom chipsets should be in, so I don't think you still need ndiswrapper (if that's what your chipset is)

Erps, whoops, also logfiles would help, specifically /var/log/Xorg.0.*
As for wireless, I believe these are relavant to you. These are relevant to you: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... ght=ralink
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=563547
Looks like you have to blacklist all the ralink drivers and use ndiswrapper ones. Ironically the builtin realtek chipset on my p5b-deluxe wifi only started working w/ WPA since Gutsy... (not too useful though since it's only good for use as an AP for a DS, since wired is so much better anyway)
Wacom entries have always been there, since it's probably easier just to keep them in there in case someone plugs one in instead of manually configuring.
You run at 800x600? Are you using dual head? It looks like it's set up for that though the 2nd head isn't enabled.
Might be easiest to remove xorg.conf (And backup), and do a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, so it generates a clean one, hopefully. Try to answer all the questions manually. If that doesn't work, then send a logfile.

1024x768 is illegibly distorted. I have no idea what dual head is... sounds kinky. You run at 800x600?
You'll need to be a bit more specific which logfiles you'd like to see, I don't know which are relevant.
I have seen both the links; I've followed the second one to the letter, as have a lot of people on the Ubuntu forums, but it just refuses to work. The card can't get an IP with the included drivers and vanishes with ndiswrapper.
I did this as a workaround to get vesa going. Right now the wireless is abigger priority, the screen right now isn't pretty but it's workable.Might be easiest to remove xorg.conf (And backup), and do a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, so it generates a clean one, hopefully. Need them after you break it trying to get it running under the ati driver obviously.
Have you fiddled w/ the new xorg gui config tool?

My partitions are a little bit screwy at the moment. Got lots of media floating about.
Must have more disks!

Are you using the VGA or the DVI port? It looks like the reason why it's not working is xorg.conf is only configured for the vga port, but you're using the DVI port instead w/ an LCD. Try changing "Default Screen" to "screen1" in that xorg.conf. You probably should then file a bug report.
As for the use of upgrading- for me it comes down to new features. I don't particularly like playing w/ things, but I do like new features.

It's a laptop, so neither. Well, one of them probably, but nothing's manually connected. Are you using the VGA or the DVI port?
I'll try changing the conf file.
ETA: changed the conf file, logged out, X took a crap. Ctrl-alt-F1'd to command line, logged in, got this:
I'm back to the supposed "default" screen and vesa now.Could not retrieve EDID because get-edid is not installed
Fatal server error: no screens found
Try this instead then:

Specifically "Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,NONE"" under the first Driver section. Enabling mergedfb might help while debugging the xorg.conf

I'm going to be a nuisance and repost what I posted to the Ubuntu forums a while ago.
Lost Flash Sound after installing 7.10. When installing, the old /home was left intact. (everything else was clean)
Troubleshooting:
Created a new user, it didn't find the plugin when attempting to access flash content so firefox asked for an install, installed flash-nonfree, restarted firefox and everything worked fine.
Ah ha, I says! Problem with /home folder.
So I switch back into my own account, get rid of all the .mozilla*, .firefox*, .macromedia ect ect. Even got rid of flash-nonfree so to recreate all the conditions that made it work in this other account.
Went to access some flash content, got prompted to install the plugin, did so, restarted the browser, cleared the cache, went to the flash content and...no sound.
What did I miss?

Perhaps some weird interaction w/ ESD or something? I don't really know, you could try moving all the .* files to a subdirectory and copying them back one by one

I'll give that a go, I might just blow away all the .*'s and recreate everything.
EDIT: Aww, that didn't work either
EDIT2: Ok, backed up all my personal files, killed that account, created another one with the same name. Now it's all gone to hell, getting all sorts of config errors and no panes coming up. I think there's a bug with deleting accounts then recreating accounts under the same name.
At this point I may just reinstall with a clean everything.

Deleting accounts doesn't delete the home directory associated with it though. You shouldn't require a reinstall or making another account, just move the old home directory one out of the way and make a new empty directory with the same name as the username, making sure to copy your .bash* and .profile over.

Wireless is flaky but running. Any changes to xorg.conf just crash X. Seems to be a shoddy or incompatible ATI driver, since the problem happens to a lot of people with this graphics chipset.Bounty, how's it working?
I'll endure vesa until I get more info. Everything else works alright, though I wish they'd finally fixed the XFCE menu. And I can't get my keyboard's juryrigged hotkeys to launch aMsn even though everything else works.
Overall, 7.10 feels like it's being held together with paperclips and scotch tape.
It seems a lot of people are having problems w/ 7.10, am I the only one who isn't?

You're definitely in the minority. 21% report flawless performance, 40% had issues and the rest were FUBAR.Pu-239 wrote:It seems a lot of people are having problems w/ 7.10, am I the only one who isn't?
This was without a doubt a premature release. The sheer number of people - including me - who couldn't even get the damn boot screen up thanks to botched usplash resolution autodetection should be enough to prove that.
