[Dicussion] ArcturusMengsk.

Post by The Duchess of Zeon »

In this thread, our sick fuck of a pompous "philosopher" declares that animal cruelty of the Michael Vick type is "art", and that autopsies on dead people to determine their cause of death is apparently somehow morally the same as chaining up a dog and letting it starve to death. I can't personally find a definite rules violation--though the association between animal cruelty and autopsies is probably some sort of DR violation in the making--though one might happen soon enough considering his constant pompous and trollish behaviour, but it seemed enough to make this thread as a sign of disapproval and warning to him. Nothing more is intended or proposed.
ArcturusMengsk wrote:Because I have no truck with the sort of moralism which wants everything to conform to some middle-class image of erudite sociability. What he did is utterly deplorable, and precisely for this reason was, in a sense, absolutely necessary. I do not condemn cruelty - even excessive cruelty - out of hand.
This claim that finding animal abuse repulsive is simply a sign of "middle-class image of erudite sociability" and his repulsively arrogant declaration that he does not condemn "even excessive cruelty" out of hand shows some moral failings on his part which are as bad as those of some of our early trolls, who were banned not so much for violations of rules, which were very informal in those days, but rather for constant expressions of loathesome ideology, unhindered and refusing to respond to debate or change when their opinions were called to account. Azeron comes to mind most prominently.

Good Zeus, what's that stench? Some arsehole just dropped a steaming pile of post modernism in SALM.

Well, can't nail him on a rule violation but I've got no qualms about pointing out the fact that he's a fucking moron.

In essence, if one can make the case, one can nail someone on Posting Rule 6.

Duchess is bringing up some decent points and really that thread is pretty out there in terms of what that particular poster is saying about such matters.

If he's refusing to concede in the face of overwhelming evidence then we'll have something for PR6. If someone wants to make the case then we'll happily start the poll. I'd happily remove every moral relativist on the board, but it can't just be because they're moral relativists.

1. someone actually did this, and there is discussion, mostly between should we hang or burn the artist in question....

2. once more it's a cheap appeal to emotion rules nitpick from the good constable Dogberry.

Actually you can depending on what it's impact is. Still that is minor niggling point given this post he's just simply going "I am above all of you.".

After reading the trainwreck-thread in question, I find a custom-title coming to mind: "Philosophically Exhausted and Morally Bankrupt".

But that's the trouble; he can't "concede" his opinion on this matter. He thinks its morally justifiable. He doesn't want us Cro-Magnons to impose our outdated morality on his intellect.

I didn't read past the OP in the dog torture thread because I have enough Bad Shit to deal with in my life right now that I just don't need to be hearing about more Bad Shit.

The "Human nature" thread - any time any one gets that polysyllabic outside of a highly technical science/engineering/math thread a little guy in the back of my head runs up a warning flag. Nothing like hiding ignorance with jargon.

However, he strikes as the type that will sooner or later dig his own grave, or, if given enough rope, hang himself (hopefully over said hole to enable ease of disposal). I'll drop in when I feel I can do the most for the cause, and participate in any polls, because frankly he makes my gorge rise.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

That's post modernism for you. To quote Penny Arcade, it's like brain poison. Now what I was going to say was something along the lines of seeing if he can justify that opinion, however after further reading I'm wondering if 'Retarded Spambot' is in order.

Well, I won't oppose it if people think there's a PR6 violation and cause for a retarded spambot title, certainly, but I'm hesitant to go beyond simply the Senate reproach of this thread at the moment.

actually depends on your moral view point. having read the whole original article on the "artist" this seems to be a form of badly done "protest art" complaining about conditions in Honduras, which I only know from Reagan era reports of death squads, and cable TV commericials talking about the horrid living conditions where feral children compete with wild dogs, and the humans can't even afford fresh water, while French and American companies make a killing on the regulation of drinking water.

So we have two homosapiens temporiarrallly lifted out of danger of starving themselves by the sale of the wild dog, which was directly competing with them for survival...

erm when did DOZ, Ein and Shep join PETA and decide that a wild animal is worth more than two feral humans?

He could have at least shot the dog with a handgun or something else reasonably quick. You're treading on dangerous ground here by suggesting that the potential benefit to the humans involved justifies torturing the dog to death.

I stated that it was rather horrific, and the statement seems to be about how horrific, the daily starving and denial of water tohumans is. yes, a got shot to the head would be about what should be done to a wild dog. they are dangerous animals, and the ones in cities/slums have been known to preadate (attack/eat fuckin spelling) humans.

also didn't I read in Alive, The Donner party accounds and in the other reports from strarvation survivors that, once your about half starved your body shuts down most of the higher brain functions and produces more endorphins, leading to ephoria, dementia, and a loss of pain sensasion.

Also to elaborate, I'm not discounting the suffering of the animal. Anyone viewing that scene could have at any time rescued the dog, or put it out of it's misery. But as Kitty Genovese, and a number of human behavior experiments have alreaady established, mankind is pretty damn good at keeping it's humanity represed.

I mean we can let children be forced to work till disabled and they starve to death to get our sneakers and tee shirts for a few dollars less. Yet, we jump up and scream about the mistreatment of an animal we probably would have shot if we saw it comming in the direction of our homes, families, and pets.

He might take that as a matter of pride, however. A generic title is therefore preferable, if he is to receive one.

I am 100% against coming up with custom custom titles for specific offenders, most especially such minor ones as this. I'd rather no punishment then that.

If we're going to do something, its probably a title (custom or otherwise). As has been demonstrated in the past couple of times discussions come up, stupidity in belief is not really enough (usually you need stupidity in action, or EXTREME stupidity.) We've let plenty of morons persist here after making dumb ass or stupid comments, I don't see what point bringing up this one specifically matters.

Of course, he ought to take this discussion to heart as a warning. If he persists in being an idiot, ,then he's liable for a very short stay here. (Then again we still keep Axis Kast around...)
