In the G1 cartoons, he turned into a pistol that someone (usually Starscream) would use.

Subsequent iterations made him a tank. I think because the toy companies didn't want to keep making big toy guns and somehow a tank is more PC.

The original toy the first Megatron is based on was supposed to be a toy gun that turned into a toy sized robot as it was part of Takara's Microman: Microchange line. All of the original Transformers that turned into small objects (like Soundwave and his mini-cassettes) were from this line while most of the rest were from Takara's Diaclone: Car Robots line. When they made the show and comics Megatron and Soundwave could shrink. Megatron became a tank in many of the later shows and also a jet sometimes.

Megatron should transform into self-propelled artillery. Dragon Megatron was ok, but a bit cliched, given the number of dragon villains in fantasy cartoons.

I second that. For someone who's been little more than a giant ice sculpture for the past million years, Michael Bay's Megatron sure rocked the Autobots. And he actually killed someone, something G1 Megatron couldn't do for 21 years (from 1984 to 2005, not counting the millions spent in stasis aboard the Ark).

P38. Not a PPK. Whilst we're nitpicking and all. Totally different gun. And yeah, he was a P38 U.N.C.L.E. Special, the real P38 didn't have the scope, stock, and barrel extension, or the extended magazine.
