Skin Dye

Post by Feil »

Well, my Google Fu is failing me, and given the number of smart, crazy, and wacky people that inhabit SDN, I thought I'd ask here. Does anyone know how I might go about buying or making some decent skin dye? Anything sufficiently wild would be lovely. Something that would allow good control and stark contrast would also be nice. Would need to be safe to use near the eyes.

Anyone know anything that would help me?

Is that anything like how Michael Jackson changed his skin color?

Pretty sure his was a genetic condition. And I'm looking for bold colors, not corpse white. Preferably blue-black and neon pink, but, as I said, anything sufficiently wild will do just fine.

Are you looking for an actual dye, or something like a latex based body makeup/paint?

You can try speaking to a plastic surgeon, some do these kinds of things. Other than that, spray paint?

That's what he says, but the condition he claims to have would only give him white spots, not turn him white over the entire surface area of his skin. The guy is unhealthily obsessed with "purity" -- look at how he views children. It's not at all unbelievable that he wanted his skin to be pure white and had a plastic surgeon do it.

Facepaint --> http://www.snazaroo.com/

Unless you really want to dye your skin? Something like using henna or indigo?

I'll back that up - I've known a few people with vitiligo, and while it ranges from a few white spots on the hands or feet or whatever to full blown pinto-people it is NOT uniform!

However - in cases of extensive vitiligo, where the skin has more white area than pigmented, people have bleached their pigmented skin to match so they do, in fact, look consistent. Pretty damn rare for that bad a case to occur, though, and he didn't seem to go through a patchy period. Then again, he's been wearing makeup for years.
It's not at all unbelievable that he wanted his skin to be pure white and had a plastic surgeon do it.
Except, of course, that a lot reputable plastic surgeons have ethical concerns about skin bleaching, the chemicals used are dangerous, some of them are banned in many countries, and it really fucks up your resistance to sunburn and skin cancer. Which is one reason why Monster Jackson carries umbrellas, wears hats and masks, and even stuff like veils. He now has the UV resistance of an albino, which doesn't make him Caucasian, it makes him a freak.

But then, one look at what is left of his face tells you he didn't go to a reputable plastic surgeon.

IIRC, he claimed that he uses the white makeup to even out the skin tone. Thing is, he could have easily used brown make up to even it out that way. The bleach job theory sounds more likely to me.

Henna has been used for centuries, if not millenia, for skin dying and it allows some fairly fine control

Indigo/woad has likewise been used for a long time.

This page looks like it might be a place to start. Note the warnings and cautions as well as patterns and suppliers.

I'm not sure any of this is safe to use close to the eyes.

Do be careful about what you put on your skin.

I get a 404 error from that page Broomstick. So this Henna is permanent right? Does it work on scars?

Try the link again, it should be fixed now.

Henna only dyes the epidermis, and it is a dye, not a tattoo. It fades as the dyed layers of skin are naturally shed, so it lasts about a month or so.

It might has some use for scar minimizing, although you'd have to have either very dark skin or dilute it somehow. It would not provide sun protection, and sunburn on white scarring could cause peeling that would cause the color to fade faster.

Henna is pretty common in Indian wedding rituals. Bride and various women get it done, with the brides being the most intricate.

You can make it really dark if you let it sit for a long while, keeping it moist with lemon or lime juice. Long being several hours. Then it'll last a lot longer.

A lighter orange is possible with just letting it dry out after you apply it, and then washing it off soon after that.

For the OP: Just use body paint. That's really the best option.

There's always black walnut husks. The outer 'skin' covering the nut will dye your hands (and anything else) a nasty-looking brown if you're not careful. Supposedly the Confederates used walnut husks to dye their uniforms during the later half of the American Civil War.
