Wannabe fascists kicked out of Polish parliament

Post by PeZook »

Remember that asshole who periodically got into the world news with some retarded statement of his? You know, the guy who made Poland a laughingstock of Europe. The guy whose government seemed to want to create a neo-fascist religious state? Who treated the EU as The Evil, but gleefully took any and all cash they were throwing at him? Who put a religious ideologue in charge of national education, and just loved to rant about the evils of gays, liberals, the educated elite and international community?

You know, the prime minister?

THE FUCKER JUST GOT VOTED OUT!
BBC wrote: Polish opposition set for big win

The centre-right opposition Civic Platform party is heading for a landslide victory in the Polish general election, partial results suggest.

With a third of ballots counted, Donald Tusk's party is on track to win 40% of the vote, or 194 seats in parliament.

The Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, whose Law and Justice Party is second with 32%, has already admitted defeat.

Sunday's election was called two years early after Mr Kaczynski's coalition collapsed over a corruption probe.

The prime minister's twin brother, Lech Kaczynski, is Poland's president.

The Law and Justice Party (PiS) has pursued former communists and adopted a sceptical approach to the European Union, while Civic Platform (PO) has promised a more business-friendly administration with closer ties to Europe, correspondents say.

'Restoring hope'

Voting in Sunday's election was extended for three hours in some parts of the country as officials struggled to cope with the sharply increased turnout of 55% - the highest since the fall of communism in 1989.

Shortly afterwards, exit polls for the TVP state television network suggested Mr Kaczynski's party had received 30.4% of the vote, some 13% less than Donald Tusk's Civic Platform.

I wish Donald Tusk every success and I congratulate him
Polish PM Jaroslaw Kaczynski

EU may welcome result

Another exit poll by the private TVN24 channel predicted the Civic Platform would win 44.2%, leaving the Law and Justice Party on 31.3%.

If correct, the Civic Platform and its preferred coalition partner, the Polish Peasants' Party, will win a majority in the 460-seat lower house of parliament, the Sejm.

The Civic Platform's leader, Donald Tusk, was showered with confetti as he appeared in front of cheering supporters at its campaign headquarters after the polls were announced.

"We went into this election in order to make everyone, without exception, feel good in their country, in their home," he said.

"I thank everyone who, in an impartial way, has helped restore hope among Poles."

Later, Mr Kaczynski admitted defeat and congratulated his rival leader at a speech to supporters at his campaign headquarters.

Mr Kaczynski said his party would be a "decisive, tough opposition"

"We have failed against a wide front," he said. "I wish Donald Tusk every success and I congratulate him."

Mr Kaczynski blamed the election result on a coalition of newspapers and political parties, who he said had stopped at nothing in their campaign to oust him.

He said the high turnout was a sign of the strength of Polish democracy and that his party should be proud of the five million votes he said it had won, almost two million more than two years ago.

In conclusion, Mr Kaczynski promised the Law and Justice Party would be a "decisive, tough opposition" in parliament and that future elections would be happier for the party.

The BBC's Nick Thorpe in Warsaw says the prime minister's speech set the tone for his party - a mix of defiance and despondency.

Only two years after they came to power, one of Europe's most colourful and controversial governments has been voted out of office, our correspondent says.

Democratic disillusion

Earlier, Mr Kaczynski chatted with voters as he queued at a polling station in Warsaw.

I didn't like being talked down to for the last two years
Jan Zawisz
Warsaw voter

"We have to accept the will of the voters, that's obvious," he said after voting, according to Reuters news agency.

"We won't get angry at the people and lessons from this campaign will be learned."

His rival, Mr Tusk, also cast his vote in the capital city.

"Of course I expect to win, but I also know perfectly well that it will not be easy and the battle goes on until the last minute," he was quoted as saying.

Poles have become disillusioned with democracy following a succession of unhappy coalition governments, says the BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw.

Many were polarised by Prime Minister Kaczynski's policies

The country is polarised over the figure of the 58-year-old prime minister, who commands both strong support and deep opposition, says our correspondent.

He has given extra power to anti-corruption agencies and purged former communists, while promoting an assertive foreign policy and traditional Catholic values.

Among his supporters, Andrzej Sulkowski said he voted for Law and Justice "because this party is telling the truth and doing something".

"In their two years of government they did what they could," he told the Associated Press news agency.

But one of Mr Tusk's supporters, Jan Zawisz, said he "didn't like being talked down to for the last two years".
Some implications from this:

1) The new government will be formed by a liberal, center-right party - no more "tought foreign policy" bullshit or blocking important European initiatives because they don't contain mandatory conservative catholic lines.

2) The Poles turned out not to be complete fucking idiots. It was priceless seeing how the now-former PM looked when he heard the results, after a campaign full of bluster and self-confidence.

3) For fuck's sake - democracy actually works for once!

Oh, and contrary to what the article has said, Kaczynski ranted about how the media were all against him and his party. Then he ranted some more, and only then did he cogratulate the new winners.

Now, if only Bush suffers a similarily crushing defeat next year, I'll be so fucking happy. Goddamn, seeing those results was like...like...like taking a hit of some wonderful drug. Damn...

Does that mean better relations with Russia and the EU and less grandstanding?

It's hard to predict things like these, but the guy who's probably going to be the new PM doesn't believe in the retarded idea of "Alienate everyone and claim it serves our national interests". Oh, and promoting inexperienced Party hacks to the most important stations - like, say, the ministry of freign affairs - is also a big no-no.

So, yeah. We can probably see less pure retardness in this area, at the least.

Kinda hard to do, given that he's not even in the 2008 election. :)

Have a very nice day.

Oh. Right. Forgot that little detail.

So, I can be super-happy right now, rather than 2008? Cool! :D

Ah, finally. Frankly, the Kaczynski government was a blight. I remember corruption scandals hitting him big, but somehow he and his brother ran everything regarding foreing policy and managed to alienate everyone...

He was also bitter towards such things like due process, separation of church and state and the separation of powers amongst the branches of government, apparently. Also, the constitution was an inconvenient obstacle for him.

I'm awed and amazed at how much damage he managed to cause in just two years. Do you know what professional qualifications our central bank manager has? A two-year MBA course in some completely unknown US university. He replaced an economics professor and accomplished reformer with him.

Jesus, I'm so glad he's out.

If things continue to develop along their present course, there's a good chance that Bush's Republican successor will also be defeated. Though I'm not thrilled with Hillary Clinton, she's a lot better for us (and, by extension, you) than any of the Republican contenders.

I knew Poland had been the acting Anus of the European Union for some time now, but only because of sites like this. Here, we never heard much other than "ZOMG their president and premier are identical twins, LOL!" in the mainstream news media.

They're not a shining paragon of virtue and reason either, but it's not all that hard to be better than the former government.

At the very least, we won't get any more "trial by media" press conferences about "corrupt" people who later turn out not to be corrupt at all. Also, the former administration was becoming more and more authoritarian in it's methods, going as far as proposing to ban gay teachers from schools, and sending special agents to seduce people in order to manufacture corruption scandals.

So, yeah. It's about time we went into the XXI century. Fuck, the air feels...better today.

That looks like a Republican dream come true. Good riddance.

I was completely astonished to read of one of the twins' comments on the idea of EU voting strength being proportional to a country's population:

"If Poland had not had to live through the years of 1939-45, Poland would today be looking at the demographics of a country of 66 million."

Source

That's the epitome of snide, bitter, us-vs-them nationalism. It's not about the people of Poland, it's about Poland as if it's got a consciousness of its own.

I still don't get why the fuck are France and UK getting the same number of votes as Germany let alone Poland.
But getting rid of the current Polish government is certainly a step in the right direction.

Indeed, it would appear quite a few people were pleased about this over here, certainly a few of the Polish people down the pub were whooping, heh.

The fact the new PM came over here to campaign for votes was somewhat amusing.

Well, with 2 million Poles now living and working abroad, what's so surprising about that? It's a huge voter base.

And, of course, it helps that most of them hate the Kaczynskis :D

We did get fucked over, but the comment is still idiotic. It's like saying the UN should take a part of US GDP by force and redistribute it, because the US got unfairly rich during the war.

And Portugal was fucked by the French and by the Germans in the 20th. We demand 20% more votes from the damned French. Besides, if everything, everywhere, had gone in our favour we'd still have Brazil and a third of Africa. Therefore I demand, oh let's say, a third of the EU parliament's votes :D

Good for Poland. Here's to hoping that Tusk will be a better European.

I heard on german radio however, that he supported the two potatoes on the matter of votes assigned and veto rights. Is that right, or was that a messup on the correspondents part?

It's true, yeah. Though you can't really blame him for trying to wrestle as many votes as possible for Poland, it's quite natural.

He's not as stubborn and pig-headed as the Kaczynskis, though, which means negotiations are actually possible now. Kaczynskis just declared what they wanted and that was it.
