Torchwood: Greeks Bearing Gifts (yeah, spoilers)
OK, Gwen and Owen are still... what do you Brits call it? Shagging. Ew. The RespectMeter is still dropping on those two.
Toshi having lesiban sex... oddly enough, this actually fit into the plot somewhat, being not entirely gratuitous sex. The alien basically had Toshi wrapped around her finger in all ways. It was also a display of how Toshi is a socially-stupid geek despite being a computer genius or whatever. But then, the alien had had a couple centuries of observing humans and using them to her advantage.
And what is it with these murderous, carnivorous aliens anyway? What, they can't find a butcher shop? It can't be that hard to find beef hearts, or pig hearts, or whatever in butcher shops - I mean I can find that shit here with no problem. Sure, you have to ask for it since they don't usually display that stuff (at least not in the US) but obtaining organ meats isn't that hard.
Which, of course, is a justification for Jack's summary execution of said alien. After all, her own culture imprisoned her, she killed her guard, and she's been (apparently) wantonly attacking people and eating bits of them for a couple centuries (and what, no one in Cardiff has noticed this before? Well, maybe she moved around. I mean, Jeff Dahmer got away with eating people quite awhile...)
I do like that the pretty, ethereal alien turns out to be a monster - pretty things are always pretty, after all.
Nice bit about how you don't really want to read other peoples' thoughts.
Still deploring the stuff affair twixt Gwen and Owen, but kind of happy to have the attention focused on Toshi a bit.

There's a not a lot of good on TV these days, what can I say?

Um... to see how bad it gets?
It's like watching a really stupid asshole skateboard down a freeway - you know it's going to end badly, but you just can't look away...
And I confess, John Barrowman is eye candy for me. I just try not to pay too much attention to the sound track. What, you guys never watched stupid shit just to look at a pretty girl?
Also, if it's a choice between the 9 pm news and Torchwood on a Saturday night at least Torchwood has better special effects and no one really gets hurt.
Until the medical shows on satellite TV get some new episodes, or Dirty Jobs, or those shows like Ice Road Trucker or the like do, I'm kinda stuck. Torchwood is at least new shit. Never bother catching the repeats, though.
There is still hope, though - we got our dish and box repaired over the weekend and can now get the National Geographic and Science channels again so there might be some opportunity for distraction.

The sad thing is, so much damage has been done in the first season, many people are still going to deride Torchwood as a poor show even when it most certainly improve in later seasons (BBC 1's Robin Hood still got a bad reptuation, even though it has found it's footing this year as harmless dumb fun).Broomstick wrote:Um... to see how bad it gets?

I always liked John Barrowman and his Captain Jack character, he cuts such a dashing figure and I thought he was somewhat underused in the Master three parter, even though he was back on form after wading through this honestly turgid show. He rather strongly resembles Tom Cruise and NCIS' Mark Harmon (who is essentially a older fifty something version of the latter two actors).
Case in point Voyager, Enterprise, and Andromeda (although Voyager and Enterprise are genius in comparsion to Andromeda or Torchwood, although that is not saying a great deal).I just try not to pay too much attention to the sound track. That particular alien individual was just a jerk. Another alien of the same species was shown in the pilot of the very-kiddie 'The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures', getting on quite well with at least one human (the other one was a poet.) Presumably it ate hearts because it liked eating hearts.Broomstick wrote:And what is it with these murderous, carnivorous aliens anyway?
It's certainly possible. I used to buy lamb hearts for my axolotl (he now preffers liver). What, they can't find a butcher shop? I do find Torchwood oddly compelling myself, even though I agree with pretty much everything levelled against it (in varying degrees). It's frustrating because all the ingredients for a great tv show seem to be there, they're just not mixed together right. I don't think the show is beyond redemption into something really worth watching... but I'll probably keep watching even if that never happens, it's strangely addictive.

I second the louse. It's like watching a train wreck I guess, or reality TV to see the likes of Simon Cowell (Stark, is that you?) shoot down some talentless fool's dreams of grandeur.Lord Woodlouse wrote:I do find Torchwood oddly compelling myself, even though I agree with pretty much everything levelled against it (in varying degrees). I'm still looking forward to Torchwood but now with much more caution, hoping they've ironed out most of the bugs and revamped everything (like the BBC arguably done with the still campy Robin Hood) - yesterday I saw one episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures and even that show aimed at under twelves was running circles around most of Torchwood's first season output (however TSJA seems to be on the same level as "Daleks in Manhatten", "Rose" or "New Earth" mind).

Are you off your rocker? It's only value as entertainment is still unintentional comedy. They are still breaking into Nottingham Castle every single episode... Blackadder Back and Forth had a more convincing portrayal of the legend.Big Orange wrote:(like the BBC arguably done with the still campy Robin Hood)

Ahh but you see, castles are designed to keep out armies not small groups of theives in bright clothing, while the guards are trained to fight soldiers, not starving peasants who've been trained in tavern fights. So you see, Nottingham is completely out classedNecronLord wrote:Are you off your rocker? It's only value as entertainment is still unintentional comedy. Lies. Norman castles were designed also to dominate the local enviroment and deal with bandits/Saxon remnants.
Anyway. Let's not hijack more than necessary.
